Range Report: Walther P99

I tested my new black, German made Walther P99 today. 150 rounds of Norinco (Green boxed) 124 gr. FMJ went through without a hitch and the stuff is cleaner than Federal American Eagle!!! I only paid $10 Canadian per box ($6-7 US). I also shot 100 rounds of PMP 115 gr. FMJ and had one failure to feed...this ammo is nasty and very dirty...I also have 500 rounds left of this stuff...before the Norinco ammo was available this was the best deal...

I found the gun to be very reliable and despite the light weight the handle made recoil seem less noticeable than on my BHP. Accuracy was not as good as my C&S BHP. I found the wide notch on the rear sight to be less precise than the narrow notch on the Novak sight. I'm still practicing to learn to pull the WIDE trigger on the P99 straight back.

This is not a complaint on the gun's inherent accuracy. I am just more used to my BHP.
Now...if someone made an aftermarket narrow trigger as well as replacement sights with a narrow notch than the P99 would equal or even surpass my custom BHP at 1/3 the cost!!!

One extra bonus...the gun is easy to clean! Wide easily accessible surfaces, few nooks and crannies!!! Cleaning my BHP and 1911 takes an hour. The P99 took 30-40 minutes!!!
The fact that it is not custom also means I don't have to baby it.

For me if I needed an accurate gun capable of precise quick shots I'll still take my custom BHP's.

For a go to the jungle 100% dependable after dropping in the mud to save my butt when it counts I'll take the P99.:D

BK-BHP/1911, get used to the trigger on it...it has a built in ability for "double-tap". fire the first round, hold the trigger in place, let out about 4mm until you feel the "click" and you're ready for the next shot. very quick, very accurate. i'd also look into contacting Earl at www.waltherusa.net for a trigger job...smoothed it out and took a couple of lbs off of it. also he has factory "white outline" sights for it. you'll find this firearm as accurate as any custom you own.

BK welcome to the club. My experience has been similair to yours. I have been putting UMC(Remington) FMJ through mine for about 200 rounds so far. Very reliable. And yes easy to take down and clean.

Try it single action mode for a long precise shot. It is pretty good for a production gun.

I tried a few double taps while breaking it in and agree with adept. When you get used to the way the trigger works you can hit a 3X5 card all day long at 7 yds or less.

adept am I reading correctly you had Earl's do a trigger job on yours? How is it compared to the factory trigger and what was the turnaround time. He has Trijicons and AO Express sights in stock now for the P99 and if I'm sending it up for sights, might as well get it all done at once.

Thanks for the kind words.

Mine is turning two in a few months and I am planning a special party for it. She's become part of the family.

My C&S BHP cost about $3400 Canadian with very expensive shipping included. My P99 cost $1100 Canadian. A new Springfield loaded goes for about $1200-$1300 Canadian.

I got the Norinco ammo from Milarm. www.milarm.com
the store's in Canada but they may ship...however shipping ammo in Today's political climate may be difficult. This ammo is some of the best factory ammo I've tried...the copper jacket is thin in some places but otherwise it is VERY clean and reliable.

I'm sure the P99 is accurate, I just find the notch in the rear sight a little too shallow and too wide for my preference. I prefer the sight picture of the Novaks. Hmmm...maybe Heinie will do some sights for the P99 in the future. That would fix everything!!!

BK-BHP/1911,

Thanks for your reply.

Milarm... I should have guess. I have dealt with them in the past and have been most pleased with the transactions.

BTW if you are still interested in picking up ANOTHER 9mm, I bought a Sig Sauer 220-1, 9mm from Milarm a month ago at the really low price of Cdn$800 NIB. No, that's not an error, it is a single stack 220 in 9, not a 226.:) Great pistol!

I will give them a call about ammo shipping charges to Ont.

IRC you had posted in 1911forum.com about some problems you were having with your Springfield. I hope they have been resolved.

Cdn$3400 for a custom BHP... you must be a BIG HP fan. :)

Hi N2299

Those Sig P220 were $750 Cdn. this spring!!! They're nice but I like SA autos.

I love BHP's. The C&S one cost a lot due to two reasons: C&S is fairly expensive and the shipping to get across the border was complicated and horrendous. I was the first person in the city to order a custom gun and Milarm's manager was 'learning while flying' on my order. I recently ordered a Wickmann BHP and cost was only about $2600 without shipping. This includes a match barrel and stippling the top of the slide too!!! Wickmann definitely has reasonable prices. Due to delays and the terrorist attacks causing more delays I am still waiting for the Wickmann gun. Milarm told me shipping this time is cheaper since they have established new contacts.

BK-BHP/1911,

So you have seen those Sigs. I read about them in sigforum from a couple of your fellow Albertan, and knew I just had to have one. Gave Milarm and bought one, sight unseen. Haven't regretted it for a single sec.

Maybe you can give me some info about "importing" a custom firearm up from the States.

I'm interested sometime within the next year or so to get either a Wilson Combat or maybe a Kimber. So far, I haven't been able to find any dealer in Canada who carry them.

Cheers!
