The gun I was using was a new SS Model 60 Rev 14 .357 mag with a 2 1/8" barrel. A pair of Hogue Bantum grips were added for concealment.

The gun was not bench tested but was fired standing from 5-7-15yards. The first set of 125gr personal defense rounds were fired from 5 yards double action. The gun is a hand full all but one rouind was placed on a six inch paper plate with a four inch spread in less than 1.5 2.0 seconds. The first shot fired went wild and the round missed the target completely.

Second set was fired from seven yards and all went into a six inch plate.

At 15 yards slow fire all but one round was into a six inch plate.

The recoil from this light .357 was such that you were aware that you were firing .357s but was not to the point that it was impossibile for the average shooter to handle.

I would not say it was enjoyable, but in a fight it would be quite possibile with a bit of practice to handle the full house .357 for most who would devote the time and practice.

.38 specials were the next order of business with some Nycads, white box ww, and some odd lots of 92 grain silver tip (no longer made I am told). The gun functioned quite well with all rounds grouping 3- 4" except for the wild missed shot ( my doing) The
little gun was able to print all rounds at 5-7-15 yards onto the plates with little trouble.

The day was overcast so I dont know what the effect of serious glare might have on the point of aim.

The gun was carried in a milt sparks Bruce Nelson stong side holster and was very quick. I work on the Texas Mexican Border seval days a month (not law enforcement) and this is going to be my primary carry for awhile as it is totaly concealable, and five shots is really all I would time for..even if I had a twenty round Mag. It just would be all over that quick one way or the other. I do carry a speed loader. In the gun have a combo of .38 special in the first four tubes with the .357 in the fifth tube to tell me to get to the speed loaders as its time to reload ( as I run for my shotgun).

I would just use this gun to get to my shotgun however I will always have it on me ,and I have found (from experence) that on the border the best gun in the whole world is the one you have with you.

S&W Model 60

My brother and I went out to my local outdoor range recently: I brought my Model 10 .38 Special, and he brought his .357 Model 60. We switched guns. I first shot a couple cylinders of 158g
LRN .38 Special...It didn't take much adjusting to after my heavier K- frame. Then I popped-in 5 rounds of 158g .357 Magnum: I loved the "kick"! Second shots were fairly controllable and I didn't want to give it back...

I really like my K-frame .38 Special, but need a Chief's Special in .357 for the palm-tingling beating that the smaller J-frame Magnum kicks-out! What a couple of nice wheelguns!
