Range Report -- S&W 686+

Welp, just got back from a trip to the Chabot Gun Range up in Northern California, with my brand new 686+.

Shot a box of .38 special +P and a box of .357 magnum. Man, revolvers are fun to shoot! I had a blast shooting the .357 (pun intended). My shots were all over the place but I didn't care. After shooting 50 rounds of .357 my SIG P226 in 9mm seemed like a little pea-shooter by comparison.

All in all, a great day at the range with my 686+. No failures whatsoever (of course). I just feel weird not cleaning it after shooting though...it just doesn't feel right not to clean a gun after shooting.

You know, .357 isn't that bad at all, I think I need a .44 now!

How'd you like having that seventh shot? I've been considering a 686+ for myself, I carry a 686 non+ at work, but have heard they have timing problems. Don't know when the problems are supposed to creep up, but I thought getting speedloaders might also be a problem.

Still, it would be really good to have an extra shot if the bad guy ever gets cocky, thinking your "six shooter" is out of ammo!

I like pistols, but if I had to choose one type of handgun, it would be a wheelgun.
My .45 colts, .357 mags, and .41 mags would be last to go.
My lone .44 mag is fun, but nothing sets it apart, all the rest of mine are special to me in some way.

Speed Loaders and timing on 686 +

HKS makes speedloaders for the 686 Plus along with the Variant that Dillon used to offer (I think they are German as I recall). So, speedloaders are offered albeit no Safarilands.

Over at Pistolsmith.com the discussion of timing has come up. See:

At S&W Forum action smoothness came up

The following discusses timing issues:

So far, mine with 1,000 rounds through it has had no problems.

VaughnT,

My first revolver was the 686+. It has seen a lot of use and had no problems other than a loose mainspring screw at one time. Five minutes and a screwdriver put it back in business.

Rather than speedloaders, look into moonclips (www.TKCustom.com). These are used by almost all competitors other than IDPA where they are not allowed (wonder why). After experience with a PC 627 V-Comp with moonclps I decided the 686+ needed them as well and trashed the speedloaders. Then my M66 is destined to be converted to be able to use moonclips.

By the way, HKS require extra attention to use as they frequently hang on to rounds and fail to leave them in the chamber.
