Range Report: Rugers, Patriot, Kel-Tec

First the good news, then the not so good.

My Ruger P-89 and P-90 performed beautifully from 25 yards. They were accurate and completely reliable. I am happy with these firearms.

I also fired the Republic Arms Patriot, which had experienced failures to extract in previous outings. There were a couple of these early on, only with the additional mags I bought from Republic, not with the mag which came with the gun. (They are different.) Overall, I am beginning to think that this could be a reliable weapon, depending on the mag used.

The bad news is that my Kel-Tec P-11jammed almost every time. The spent shell remained in the chamber and the point of the round being loaded had its nose against the bottom of the fired shell. I had not had this problem previously. I was using different ammo than before. Previously I had used Remington UMC FMJ, 115 grain. Today I used for the first time less expensive Winchester FMJ 115 grain in the white box. This ammo worked fine in the Ruger P-89. Is something worng with my pistol or does it not work with this ammo? Any ideas?

Thanks,

DrakeJake,

I have that exact same problem with my P-11. I find that if I use a shorter round (less overall length), it's totally reliable. I had probs with Winchester and UMC also. Look at Fiocchi, and some reloads, or just something a little less pointy... preferrably shorter too.

Problem with Kel-Tec Extractor

Several people have suggested that the Winchester white box ammo works fine with P-11. I will have to try some different ammo with mine and see if the problem persists. I didn't have this problem last time and cleaned the pistol after firing it. Could the extractor have gone bad in these circumstances?

Comparing UMC and Winchester Ammo

Based on the hint just given, I have compared my UMC 9MM and the Winchester 9 MM used today. The Winchester bullet is definitely longer and perhaps more pointy (I'm not sure.)

Wouldn't hurt to give your extractor a quick check, to see if it is undamaged and functioning properly.

1) Field strip
2) Examine the extractor visually. Is the part that engages the cartridge case symmetrical (i.e. no chips or breaks)?
3) Does the extractor spring work properly? With an appropriate object, push the extractor out, as though it were releasing a case. It should require significant effort, but should move smoothly and not bind.

FWIW Winchester el cheapo white box works okay in my P-11. Hmmm,wait...it did just have it`s first EVER jam (out of thousands of rounds) a few weeks ago with that ammo. Still I must have fired a hundred rounds or so of it before and after that one jam. Still okay for range ammo, at least in my Keltec. Marcus

"Any ideas?"

Sure...sell it to me.

Where are you located [what *is* it with people who don't want to list their locations?]?

Give me a fair price and I'll take your problem pistol out of your hands...

ive fired both whitebox and umc thru my p11, had one failure to extract out of 100box of whitebox's, prob my fault for limp elbowing the shot, and one failure to feed out of a box of 100 umc's. there both the same price at the local walmart so for me its a cointoss. either way they both werk fine for target ammo for me, although i prefer the umc a lil more
