Range Report - Ruger Super Single Six

Just came back from the range, and had such a good experience I had to write one of those range reports for my fellow TFLers.

I picked up a brand spanking new Ruger Super Single Six (stainless with adjustable sights) with the 5.5" barrel a few months ago. The gun was fitted real nice, and had very nice rosewood grips (probably the best i've seen on a production revolver, sorry no pic yet). The gun also came with the .22 magnum cylinder which is great to have, just adds to the versitility of this fine revolver.

I was shooting some CCI and Federal 22's, I haven't given the .22 magnum cylinder a workout yet, and I just could not believe the accuracy of this gun. Plus, what a pleasure to shoot. I could easily keep all 6 shots well under 1" with most going under .5 " at almost any distance I cared to put the target. At 25yds the groups opened up a bit to about 1.0 to 1.25". The gun also balanced very well and just plain felt good in my hand.

I live in a suburb of NY and I have to say that folks in these parts tend to be a bit stressed out, we do everything fast and life can be a stressful blur. Well shooting this revolver was a great stress reliever it really makes you slow down and concentrate on the basics of sight picture and trigger control.

This is a great gun with a lot of versitility, built like a tank, and a definite never sell. If you are even remotely considering a .22\.22 mag don't even give it a second thought, just buy one (just an FYI... I don't work for Sturm Ruger and don't even own shares in the company).

About the only thing that I would do with this revolver is change the rear sight to get something that has a more positive and audible click adjustment. The one Ruger supplies with the gun doesn't seem to have that positive click into place on adjustments so its difficult to tell how much you have adjusted it.

If anyone can give me a recommendation on sights, it would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

I have owned my Super Single Six for a little over 3 years now and I share your enthusiasm! Mine is also stainless with a 5 1/2" barrel. The accuracy is surprisingly good with mine using 22lr. Have not shot much 22 Mag and the times I did shoot them the accuracy was not that great. Yours could be entirely different in this regard. But I am glad it shoots thew 22lr better since that is what I intended to shoot the majority of the time.

I agree with your comments on the rear sight. I plan to replace mine in the future. Hamilton Bowen sells a Ruger rear sight which seems like it would be an ideal replacement from what I have read. I had their brochure and I can't recall the price - plus the prices may not be correct since this was a few years ago. If I find the brochure I'll re-post with the info.

Nice report. Wish I could say the same about mine. Bought it new 1973. One of the first New Models on the market. Mine shoots nothing well. 2 to 3 inch groups are about the best it will do. I do find it shoots best dirty and I mean dirty. After a few hundred rounds the groups begin to tighten. If you clean it good, you have to start over again.

My wife has a Ruger single six like you describe that her father gave her. If anybody tried to take it, there would DEFINITELY be a gunfight. (And she has a VERY fast draw! :)) She immediately installed the .22 mag cylinder and ordered a "Texas Gunslinger"
belt/holster combo. When it was delivered, she filled all the spare cartridge loops on the back with .22 mags. This is the pistol she wears around the house and also what she "warms up" with when we go to the range. It's nice when your wife has her own little collection.:p

Now go ALL THE WAY. Wretched excess :). Some loon of a gunsmith is doing "Single 8" conversions. That's right - a custom 8-round cylinder :D. With custom barrel and a second 8-shot cylinder in the other caliber you're talking about a grand or so but hey, what the hell, ya know?

:D

Thanks

Thanks for your responses to my post. I happen to be in the process of checking out the Bowen adjustable sight, and will probably order one, as they are a no gunsmithing required proposition.

I've also had El Paso Saddelry make up a 1920's Tom Threepersons holster with fishscale stamping for the gun. I have to say that I'm favorably impressed with the quality of this holster and would definitely recommend them.

Happy Trails,

I bought a used one of these in stainless with the 6 1/2 inch barrell a few months ago. I recently took it to the range for the first time. Talk about easy shooting. The revolver was very accurate with both the .22 lr and mag cylinders with both getting groupings under 1 1/2 inches from 25 yards, and I'm not that great of a shooter.

I bought a three-screw Single Six Convertible from a teenage friend more than three decades ago.

It is still my most accurate .22 handgun ever...
