Range Report - Remington 788

I took the 788 to the local range.

Wasn't expecting much, since it's iron sights.

Wow - what a fantastic shooter!

The 100 yd target was busy all afternoon with hunters sighting in.

My son (13 yrs old) loved the rifle. We shot at 50 and 75 yds ---- and got consistent 2" groups on a paper plate. (remember - we're talking 13 yrs old with iron sights).

Only problem --- we were shooting some 15 yr old reloads that came with the rifle --- and a couple of rounds burst/cracked near the neck. I got rid of the re-loads immediately.

The safety leaves a bit to be desired (plastic). The magazine release knob is also hard plastic (no issues - just seems like it could be better).

We're going to pick up some Leverevolution rounds from local dealer for hunting purposes. (1300 lbs at 200 yds!).

My prediction - This rifle is going to get loved a lot. It is a great shooter.

Trust not in a mechanical safety: it can and will, eventually, fail.

I had a 788 (in .243 WIN), once upon a time ..... wish I still had it. Mine was very accurate, even in my juvenile (at the time) hands.....

The only issue I have with it is that the bolt lugs are at the rear- making for a "springy" bolt ..... hard on brass at max loads. Not an issue if you don't reload or shoot hot loads...

Cool little gun, think the Model 7 addressed most of it's shortcomings but seem to recall it's in a different price range now.
