Range Report on H&R Sportsman .22

This morning I fired 90 rounds through this revolver, half single action, half double, freehand, from 25 yards, towards targets with a 10 inch diameter. I just got this used handgun yesterday. Single action, I shot left but not low (I am right-handed). Double action, I shot a little left and a little low. On both targets many hits were within three inches of dead center. No surprise, the pattern was a bit tighter when shooting single action.

The cylinder holes are a little tight and so after loading with an HKS speedloader, I had to push the rounds into the holes. Ejection with this revover is great. Just pull up on the rear sight to break open the revolver. First the shells are ejected and then the ejector star pops back into the cylinder for loading.

My model has a solid barrel, no rib vents, and a six-inch barrel. The cylinder easily comes off by pressing a lever on the right side of the frame.

So I am happy with this new acquisition.

I used to own the H&R Mod. 999 which is the same gun with a 10-shot cylinder, top break action, etc. The front sight on mine was adjustable for elevation & the rear sight for windage only. After firing it awhile, the cylinder gets dirty; that's when you have to push the rounds in. 22 ammo leaves more residue than other calibers. The only problem I had was the rear sight blade kept getting loose & the D.A. trigger pull was too heavy, but for the low price, it was a great revolver.

The Sportsman revolvers have nine round cylinders, not ten round. The only 10 round .22 revolver I know about is the big SW model being produced today.

I cleaned my Sportsman before firing it and the rounds still would not drop all the way into the holes. My SW 63 is the same way. One of the advantages of the Taurus 94 nine shot revolvers is that the bullets load a little easier. The holes must be slightly larger on the Taurus than on the SW or the Sportsman.
