Range Report -- new S&W 686+ 4"

Finally got my new 686+ to the range. Before taking it there I dry fired it quite a bit (using snap caps) and I think that this paid off, as the trigger seemed to smooth out just a tad. Sweet trigger and sweet shooter. Shooting double-action from 10 yards, this is my best target of the day. (As you can see, Jerry Miculek is in no immediate danger. )

I have been wanting a 4" revolver forever, but for whatever reason it seems like 686 or GP100 four-inchers rarely show up in the local gun stores. So when this one did, I snapped it up.

Really liking this handgun. It is a very shootable revolver, with a nice trigger, and the red-ramp sight works very well for me. I can see that I will be firing a lot of 38 special!

Nice looking gun!

And I like the grips. What brand are they? I am like you in that I think the 4 inch is just right for balance and control. Enjoy the new gun and thanks for sharing the pictures. ;)

I have a 686 4". I got it in 1986 (It's a 686, and I got it on 6/6/86 - always thought that was kinda neat.)

Fast forward 27 years, thousands of rounds, and multiple gun purchases later, and it's STILL my favorite gun to shoot. It's out of the box stock and I shoot IDPA with it - and Jerry Miculek is safe here too.

I'm thinking about getting another, because mine - being an older model - is a square butt. And I have come to like the round butt grip better. (The new ones are round butts.) Question is, will I get a 6 or 7-shot? Probably a 6. But we'll see.

I see 11 or 12 holes from a 7-shooter! Must have mixed in some duplex loads. :D

I have the same gun, just older and pre-lock. I find it has a delightful trigger pull. I also added Hogue Monogrips to mine, replacing the rubber Monogrips with non-finger groove wooden ones.

The heavy barrel makes for steadier sighting, at least in my jittery hands. This gun is a keeper for me.

Love my 4-inch 686+ ... wonderful accuracy, excellent trigger, a great piece of work ... I put Trausch rubber grips on mine, not the most beautiful but the rubber covers the backstrap and erases almost all the recoil impact, and it has a little duck tail at the top which really helps with muzzle flip ... fantastic gun ..

Suffice to say

Suffice to say that you picked up a very fine gun that is most likely a really sweet shooter. I definitely prefer the 686 over many.

Beautiful gun. Yes, the 4" .357 revolvers are hard to find, especially the 686 and GP100 because they are so in demand. I finally gave up this year and went to option #2 and got a 4" M29 .44 Mountain Gun. I didn't even realize S&W had switched frame design but was pleasantly surprised it has a round butt as well.

Enjoy your 686, it should last, well...FOREVER. :)
