Hi, y'all
As promised, here's my report on the first IPSC tournament that i participated in the Sunday B4 Christmas:
There were about thirty of us who competed in the "novice" category, but i could already tell that some of the other players were several tourneys more experienced than i was, judging from their familiarity with the course rules, camaraderie with other gunners, and the fancy accessories for their weapons. I also realized that I was the only one with a HK USP, the rest were 1911's, Glocks, CZ's, & BHP's. Well, i just had to shrug off the anxiety building up in my gut and concentrate more on the task at hand. To ease my nervousness, i got myself to talk with one of the more composed players in the field, and he gladly assisted in explaining to me the do's and dont's of each test stage.
Soon enough, my name was called, fortunately after several competitors had already completed the first of four stages that i was about to tackle and giving me a hint of what to do. The only thing that was bugging me was the fear that i may fumble as i had not even fired a string of practice shots. "Be slow to be fast" i kept on telling myself, a tip i picked up from you guys.
Stage 1 - Gun in holster con#1, Double taps w/ mag change, 7 stationary, 1 popper, 1 swinger, 17 shots in all : Had a miss at the last target (12yds) but i had the best time that stood for quite a while B4 another shooter outdid me...
Stage 2 - Gun on table in con#1, DBL taps, 7 stationary thru 2 small windows, squatting : I did just fairly here. No one told me that this would be quite physically demanding, the knee at this stage was essential.
Stage 3 - Gun in holster in con#1, Dbl taps thru grid panels, 5 targets with no-hit obstacles - I had the best score and time with this one! Again the legs/knees were essential.
Stage 4 - Dbl taps with 4 targets, start lying down with gun atop a table by my feet on con#1 : I got beat here real bad! The friggin' BELLY just got in the way of me rising us as fast as possible to pick the gun up.
Overall, i place fifth. Not bad, i thought, not bad at all .
And by the way, my USP was as reliable as the sun would shine tomorrow, and every day after that! Several of the competitors had FTE's mostly, which may have helped in my placing well in the standings.
I can't wait to join the next tourney...
Thanks for all your tips, guys - about safety, ammo selection, gun handling, and competition. You're the best!
Keep shooting!
