Range Report - HK36

Recently I had the pleasure of participating in an "international weapons training event" with some Spanish Soldiers (haha, it was really "Hey, can I shoot your weapon? you can shoot mine.") and I thought I would tell you guys a little about it.

I shot their HK36 and they shot our M4. Right off the bat, every agreed their weapon was heavier and had less recoil. My thought was that their weapon was top heavy. This particular rifle I shot had the integrated scope and an Eotech.

I much preferred the integrated scope for 2 reasons. 1, I'm not the biggest Eotech fan, and 2, the integrated scope you could put your cheek on the stock like any other rifle you shoot. To shoot with the Eotech, you put your chin on top off the stock, instead of using your cheek. Kinda awkward. It was an accessory this particular Soldier decided to add, not necessarily something they all use. I like having less weight with our M4, and I preferred the ability to switch optics or your iron sights thanks to our rail on top.

I really liked the ambidextrous charging handle that completely folds out of the way when not in use. Not that there is anything wrong with our M4's charging handle, but I like the HK's better.

This was more familiarity training, so I wasn't really shooting for accuracy. Also, I was shooting at unknown distances, but overall it struck me as accurate. I seemed to hit whatever I was aiming at.

The HK's folding stock was rock solid. If I didn't know what I was looking at, I never would have thought it moved at all. Easy to use when you wanted it to fold, though. Probably just because I'm more familiar with the collapsing buttstock, but I would choose ours. If I had time to get used to the folding stock, I would probably want that. Just a guess though.

Finally, the HK has full auto, while the M4 has burst.. I don't care for the awkward trigger pull the M4 uses in burst, and full auto is more fun (but not necessarily the better option for combat, I know). So I give this to the HK.

When I asked the Spanish which weapon they preferred, they agreed theirs, but probably just because that's what they are used to. And I would agree with that. Both are very capable battle rifles that I would feel safe with going into combat. It was a great experience - getting to shoot a weapon I've never shot before and getting to know some Spanish Soldiers.

I have held one a couple of times but never got to fire one. It felt top heavy/front heavy to me too. The ones I got to play with just had the integrated optic and it wasn't loaded so that might have changed the balance versus what you were looking at.

Thanks for the info.

How did you like the mag changes?

I have rifles with both folding stocks and collapsible. I would rather have collapsible than folding too. Shaving 4 inches off isn't worth giving up being able to adjust the stock to fit.

Now having both is Mo betta.:D

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the mag changes. I definitely preferred the M4 on this one. For those of you who have not held one, the mag release is at the base of the magazine well, by the trigger. It was pretty awkward I though. I had to kinda rearrange my grip and hands to get it off. Just moving your trigger finger up and pushing a button is much better!

I also thought the internals moved more smoothly inside the HK, not sure if that makes sense, but it was kind of like driving a silky smooth lexus over a every day Chevrolet... both get the job done, but there's something nice about how smooth the action was.

Can't comment on accuracy or reliability since I have never shot a real one, however I have a airsoft gas blowback G36 and I kinda regret buying the thing. Compared to my AR, the G36 just feels horrible. Almost all the controls are in an awkward place, except for the charging handle, the G36 wins that one. Though it's still pretty bad in itself. Also I feel the G36 is just way too big for what it is. Mine is the full length rifle model, but I don't mean the length, I chose that. The gun is just too wide and tall and just feels bulky. The AR is much more sleek and compact and doesn't feel like holding a fencepost. A 5.56 assault rifle does not need to be as big as the G36 is.

Then there's the magazines. But I'm sure people are familiar with how bad they are. I think the conversion mag well for STANAG mags is a must on this rifle.

Honestly if I got to pick an assault rifle, the G36 would be way down on the list. Looks nice in pictures, but really annoying when you actually hold the thing.

Also I was always under the impression that the G36 is lighter than an AR.
