Recently I had the pleasure of participating in an "international weapons training event" with some Spanish Soldiers (haha, it was really "Hey, can I shoot your weapon? you can shoot mine.") and I thought I would tell you guys a little about it.
I shot their HK36 and they shot our M4. Right off the bat, every agreed their weapon was heavier and had less recoil. My thought was that their weapon was top heavy. This particular rifle I shot had the integrated scope and an Eotech.
I much preferred the integrated scope for 2 reasons. 1, I'm not the biggest Eotech fan, and 2, the integrated scope you could put your cheek on the stock like any other rifle you shoot. To shoot with the Eotech, you put your chin on top off the stock, instead of using your cheek. Kinda awkward. It was an accessory this particular Soldier decided to add, not necessarily something they all use. I like having less weight with our M4, and I preferred the ability to switch optics or your iron sights thanks to our rail on top.
I really liked the ambidextrous charging handle that completely folds out of the way when not in use. Not that there is anything wrong with our M4's charging handle, but I like the HK's better.
This was more familiarity training, so I wasn't really shooting for accuracy. Also, I was shooting at unknown distances, but overall it struck me as accurate. I seemed to hit whatever I was aiming at.
The HK's folding stock was rock solid. If I didn't know what I was looking at, I never would have thought it moved at all. Easy to use when you wanted it to fold, though. Probably just because I'm more familiar with the collapsing buttstock, but I would choose ours. If I had time to get used to the folding stock, I would probably want that. Just a guess though.
Finally, the HK has full auto, while the M4 has burst.. I don't care for the awkward trigger pull the M4 uses in burst, and full auto is more fun (but not necessarily the better option for combat, I know). So I give this to the HK.
When I asked the Spanish which weapon they preferred, they agreed theirs, but probably just because that's what they are used to. And I would agree with that. Both are very capable battle rifles that I would feel safe with going into combat. It was a great experience - getting to shoot a weapon I've never shot before and getting to know some Spanish Soldiers.
