Range report - My newest range toy,,,
This is an off-shoot of this previous thread.
I had a small windfall of money and decided to buy myself a range toy,,,
I purchased a Hi-Point 995TS Carbine from Buds Gun Shop.
I ordered the gun on Saturday evening about 7:00 in the evening,,,
I picked it up at the Evil Pawn Shop at Noon the following Wednesday.
The rifle did need a teeny bit of assembly,,,
I had to attach the charging handle to the action,,,
Note that after you do that, the rifle won't fit in the cardboard box.
The carbine came with a tool that fits the charging handle bolt,,,
And also has a screwdriver blade for the adjustable sight.
The rifle came with three 10-round magazines,,,
It also came with a magazine holder that attaches to the skeleton stock.
I also had to attach the sling loops to the stock,,,
They mount on the right side of the rifle which seems a bit strange,,,
I ended up taking it off because I couldn't figure how to use the sling on that side.
Perhaps I'm simply not aware of the proper technique,,,
But that's the side the picture showed to mount the sling loops on.
I ran a rod and a swab through the barrel,,,
Just to remove any packing grease that might be there,,,
Looking at the instructions I think breaking it down fully might be a bear.
So now out to the range.
Really windy and a bit chilly,,,
Not the best weather for shooting,,,
So today I stayed on the 25 & 50 yard ranges.
I ran 30 rounds of Winchester FMJ flat nose through it,,,
Then I ran 50 rounds of Federal FMJ round nose through it,,,
Lastly I ran 50 rounds of some UMC FMJ round nose through it.
Not one misfeed, fail to eject, or malfunction of any kind.
Then I ran another 50 of Federal and 50 of UMC,,,
Still no malfunctions of any type.
Recently I got to fire 20 rounds through a Beretta Cx4 Storm,,,
I wasn't overly impressed with the Beretta Carbine,,,
It "rang" like a bell with every shot.
This Hi-Point Carbine feels much more solid,,,
It didn't make any rattling or ringing noises when fired.
Personally I don't really like the looks of the tactical stock as well as the old style,,,
But I have to admit that even though it is plastic it does have a solid feel.
The butt plate has three springs built into it,,,
The Hi-Point website says "Internal recoil buffer in stock".
Just for the heck of it I jammed a few empty rifle cartridges in the spring space,,,
Believe it or not the danged little recoil buffer actually makes a difference,,,
There was a lot more felt recoil with it disabled than with it working.
The iron sights were easy to use and align to the target,,,
With the wind it was difficult to shoot accurately,,,
But I was rolling a soda can at 25 yards.
I'm going to mount a 4X scope on it because of my 60 year old eyes,,,
But the stock sight seemed to be very close at 50 yards,,,
I hit the soda can 4 out of 10 at that range,,,
That danged wind is my alibi de jour.
Now for the trigger,,,
It's really weird,,,
It's plastic.
The trigger pull is difficult to describe,,,
It's not overly long and not too heavy in it's pull,,,
But it is somewhat, well, spongy is the only way to describe it.
I don't think it's a bad trigger,,,
I think I'll get used to it no problem,,,
It's just unlike any I can remember experiencing.
The pistol grip is very fat for a single stack magazine,,,
I have to move my hand on the pistol grip,,,
To activate/release the safety switch,,,
Same with the mag release button.
The magazines loaded with cartridges easily enough,,,
But didn't insert into the magazine well smoothly.
I did figure out how to insert them without catching/snagging,,,
But it does take a very deliberate effort on my part,,,
Hopefully that will smooth out with more use.
The last couple of mags I tried doing a mag dump,,,
10 rounds as fast as I could pull the trigger,,,
I did that twice with no problems at all.
So overall I give the Hi-Point 995TS Carbine,,,
The Aarond H. Graham Thumbs-Up Stamp of Approval.
As a range toy for when my buddies and I go out to pretend we are Operators,,,
I believe this carbine is going to serve it's intended purpose just fine.
If Zombies attack I'll probably wish for larger magazines,,,
But all in all I feel it is worth the $296.55 I paid for it.
