Range report - My newest range toy,,,

This is an off-shoot of this previous thread.

I had a small windfall of money and decided to buy myself a range toy,,,
I purchased a Hi-Point 995TS Carbine from Buds Gun Shop.

I ordered the gun on Saturday evening about 7:00 in the evening,,,
I picked it up at the Evil Pawn Shop at Noon the following Wednesday.

The rifle did need a teeny bit of assembly,,,
I had to attach the charging handle to the action,,,
Note that after you do that, the rifle won't fit in the cardboard box.

The carbine came with a tool that fits the charging handle bolt,,,
And also has a screwdriver blade for the adjustable sight.

The rifle came with three 10-round magazines,,,
It also came with a magazine holder that attaches to the skeleton stock.

I also had to attach the sling loops to the stock,,,
They mount on the right side of the rifle which seems a bit strange,,,
I ended up taking it off because I couldn't figure how to use the sling on that side.

Perhaps I'm simply not aware of the proper technique,,,
But that's the side the picture showed to mount the sling loops on.

I ran a rod and a swab through the barrel,,,
Just to remove any packing grease that might be there,,,
Looking at the instructions I think breaking it down fully might be a bear.

So now out to the range. :D

Really windy and a bit chilly,,,
Not the best weather for shooting,,,
So today I stayed on the 25 & 50 yard ranges.

I ran 30 rounds of Winchester FMJ flat nose through it,,,
Then I ran 50 rounds of Federal FMJ round nose through it,,,
Lastly I ran 50 rounds of some UMC FMJ round nose through it.

Not one misfeed, fail to eject, or malfunction of any kind.

Then I ran another 50 of Federal and 50 of UMC,,,
Still no malfunctions of any type.

Recently I got to fire 20 rounds through a Beretta Cx4 Storm,,,
I wasn't overly impressed with the Beretta Carbine,,,
It "rang" like a bell with every shot.

This Hi-Point Carbine feels much more solid,,,
It didn't make any rattling or ringing noises when fired.

Personally I don't really like the looks of the tactical stock as well as the old style,,,
But I have to admit that even though it is plastic it does have a solid feel.

The butt plate has three springs built into it,,,
The Hi-Point website says "Internal recoil buffer in stock".

Just for the heck of it I jammed a few empty rifle cartridges in the spring space,,,
Believe it or not the danged little recoil buffer actually makes a difference,,,
There was a lot more felt recoil with it disabled than with it working.

The iron sights were easy to use and align to the target,,,
With the wind it was difficult to shoot accurately,,,
But I was rolling a soda can at 25 yards.

I'm going to mount a 4X scope on it because of my 60 year old eyes,,,
But the stock sight seemed to be very close at 50 yards,,,
I hit the soda can 4 out of 10 at that range,,,
That danged wind is my alibi de jour. ;)

Now for the trigger,,,
It's really weird,,,
It's plastic.

The trigger pull is difficult to describe,,,
It's not overly long and not too heavy in it's pull,,,
But it is somewhat, well, spongy is the only way to describe it.

I don't think it's a bad trigger,,,
I think I'll get used to it no problem,,,
It's just unlike any I can remember experiencing.

The pistol grip is very fat for a single stack magazine,,,
I have to move my hand on the pistol grip,,,
To activate/release the safety switch,,,
Same with the mag release button.

The magazines loaded with cartridges easily enough,,,
But didn't insert into the magazine well smoothly.

I did figure out how to insert them without catching/snagging,,,
But it does take a very deliberate effort on my part,,,
Hopefully that will smooth out with more use.

The last couple of mags I tried doing a mag dump,,,
10 rounds as fast as I could pull the trigger,,,
I did that twice with no problems at all.

So overall I give the Hi-Point 995TS Carbine,,,
The Aarond H. Graham Thumbs-Up Stamp of Approval.

As a range toy for when my buddies and I go out to pretend we are Operators,,,
I believe this carbine is going to serve it's intended purpose just fine.

If Zombies attack I'll probably wish for larger magazines,,,
But all in all I feel it is worth the $296.55 I paid for it.

You are correct about some of the carbine's quirks but I agree that overall its a fun little gun at the range. I put a BSA red dot on mine and so far its held zero and been a hoot. Congrats.

OH NO AAAROND!!! YOU BOUGHT A HI-POINT!!! Just be careful, I heard that they tend to fall apart after the first 8 rounds, not accurate enough to hit a barn from the inside, they raise your interest rate, beat your dog, steal your wife and destroy the ozone layer...

Really though, great report. I have never owned a hi-point but have a few friends that do and they love them, and I have shot them extensively. Your findings are about like mine, accurate, reliable, quirky, great fun and a good value. Someday I may buy one just for giggles to have around, maybe a glove box gun.

Have fun with your new toy! I'm really glad you like it!

I am very pleased with mine as well--Hard to say which one I like best, My KT Sub2K or the HiPoint.

Depletes the ozone layer?,,,

Hello BlackJackID,,,
I chuckled out loud.

Hello Ridge_Runner_5,,,
When a company uses another's magazines,,,
Wouldn't they need to pay some kind of a royalty fee?

Hello Bamashooter,,,
Thanks for the recommendation on the BSA red dot.

Hello PT-92,,,
I considered the Kel Tec,,,
But it was quite a bit more expensive,,,
And the folding stock makes optics impossible,,,
With my 60 year old eyes I need a bit of sighting assistance.

I took it out again on Sunday morning,,,
The wind wasn't nearly as bad as it was on Friday.

I ran 50 rounds of slow careful shooting,,,
Standing at 50 yards I was drilling an 8" plate,,,
I think that I counted 41 separate holes in the plate.

Not too bad for my 60 year old eyes,,,
Hopefully the scope I have on order will help improve that.

Overall I am well pleased with the performance of the carbine,,,
It's proving out to be a fine range toy.

Hello Ridge_Runner_5,,,

I don't think so. Kel-Tec does it with the Sub-2000. I doubt they pay royalties to Glock and Beretta.

They can provide one off-brand mag from, say, Mec-Gar, and leave it up to the owner to buy more mags from whomever.

I never thought about Mec-Gar mags,,,

But you are probably correct,,,
Don't say it is a Glock magazine,,,
Say it takes Mec-Gar model XXX mags,,,
Let the owners figure out they fit Glocks as well.

But I really don't mind the 10 round mags,,,
I was burning through ammo fast enough at 10,,,
If I had 25 round mags I would be out of ammo in 5 minutes. :o

Back when I had an M-1 Carbine,,,
I loved the 5 round mag it came with. ;)
