Added this to my personal armory SAT. I got a catalog from a company called Federal Arms Corp. They had advertised this as new Overseas military contract cancelation, $499.95 Heavy barrel under handguards 20 inch barrel A2 style muzzle break sling and mag. Found out that it was made by Hesse arms. Now over at Ar-15.com they were bashing Hesse pretty bad so I was A bit nervous. When I picked it up and cleared it it was NOT locking open on an empty mag. Started to panick a bit and I know that it showed. Part fit was very good NO slop in receiver fit mag catch tight bolt catch tight too. Ask some guy to take a look at it and he was ex-military and said it was tight too. took it home and field stripped it sun morning. Take down pin and pivot pin very tight to get out. Had to use punch and rubber mattel to get them out. Since this was my first AR was a little nervous with it as mentioned above. Took about 2 hrs with it put it back to gether and put it away. Monday-- ON the line time: Went through 100rds of mixed ball UMC PMC and American Eagle not a bobble. Took some time but sighted it in for 100+ yards clover leafed 4 rounds:cool: Got used to it and such(little different from my mini-14) mags started to lock back bolt when empty(was a mag issue not gun). Was getting happier by the minute over all I am very happy with this product! Well now how do you guy think I did? The cost of the rifle was $558 out the door from my dealer. Any tips for the new AR owner? I WILL get surplus mags this weekend at the gun show. Also more ammo. Thanks gang....DAROGUE1

It sounds like you are happy and that is all that matters. You cannot find a new AR for that price but they are getting cheaper. Shoot the heck out of it and ignore anyone who tried to slight you for the Hesse. They have made some crappy products but that does not mean yours is not a winner. Sad part is, you will want a Bushmaster or an Oly next...then a Colt...then a preban...and it only getts worse =) Have fun and good shooting.

Ditto what Gumbo said! AR's are very addictive, you'll be plotting to get a second upper or some nice accesories (like a light or bipod) next. Make sure you check into some optics - they're a lot of fun.

I have a Hess lower receiver that I buitlt up a rifle using several different manufacturers parts. (Bushmaster Upper, no-name painted stock and grip, and Model 1 lower parts) It went together just fine and looks great. Enjoy yours!

Will be buying accessories this weekend at Harrisburg gun show. Want to get 4x scope to mount on carry handle. Mags as mentioned and AMMO. Also a case the box at the range is a pain. DAROGUE1

Get some stripped clips and chargers to fill those mags with.

It makes it pretty easy at the range - just fill the stripper clips at home and then when you get to the range, pop a charger on top of a magazine, zip in a few stripper clips and you're ready to go. Does away with all the mess of filling magazines by had while at the range. They're pretty cheap too.

Have fun.

yorec thanks for the tip......

I have two bandoleers loaded with .223 for my mini-14 now I can used the clip guide that it came with. Thanks again! DAROGUE1

Careful - the stripper clip guide for Mini 14 stripper clip is a little different than the AR 15 stripper clip guide. I don't remember which, but one is a little thicker than the other (the seating grooves are in a different place) It may mar your magazines. I think it will still work, but as cheap as they are, get an AR one when you can...

Just to clarify.....

Thanks for the tip I have 2 USGI M-16 Chargers and 1 specifically for the mini-14. I bought bandoleers as a repack kit. One is a seven pocket and the other is a four pocket one. DAROGUE1
