Range Report: For the S&W Model 986 9MM

Today I finally got to take my S&W Model 986 to the range. Since I don't currently reload for 9mm I had to purchase some ammo for it. The first 50 rounds I purchased would not fire consistently. It was like they where squib loads. I returned that box and the people at the gun shop said they had bad primers. So I got a different brand and they fired just fine.

The gun is very accurate right out of the box. It has a medium trigger pull about 4 pounds or so. The recoil is a little more then I expected for a firearm of this weight. The firearm holds 7 round with the use of full moon clips. The full moon clips that where provided with the firearm are to large and do not hold the 9mm round. I think the moon clips the where provide are for the .38 Special size round. You can make them work but it takes some juggling.

This firearm can be fired without the use of the moon clips except it will not eject the spent cartridge's. You will need to use a cleaning rod to push the spent cartridge's out of the cylinders.

The other issue I have found is that only one place on the internet carries moon clips for this firearm and they are relatively expensive at $4.00 a clip. Smith & Wesson does not carry the moon clips for this firearm on there website.

I will be calling S&W on Monday to see about getting the correct moon clips.

In total this firearm is a joy to shoot and is very accurate right out of the box. It was totally worth the money.

9mm is actually quite snappy out of a revolver. A friend has a 3" 547, and it bucks more than a Model 10 with decent .38's.

If you feel like taking the plunge, .38 S&W casings can be cut and loaded with 9mm bullets, giving you a rimmed cartridge.

i have a 986 too and fired about two hundred rounds through it already with no problems... the moonclips were fine and no misfires...actually very easy to load and unload the clips by hand... i wouldnt suggest firing the gun without moon clips becuase it was not designed for it..
