Range Report for Taurus Model 605..

For those contemplating buying the Taurus Model 605 .357 mag, My first trip to the range was satisfying with few surprises. The Mod 605 is basically the same size as their very successful Mod 85 .38 spc. I started by shooting some .38 spcl 125 gr SJHP's at about 10 yards. The 605 weighs in at approx 24 oz-accuracy was excellent and recoil minimal. Then, I shot some .357 mag 125 gr SJHP reloads. Again, excellent accuracy and manageable recoil. Wow, what muzzle flash with that cheap stuff! Whew! I also had a few embarrassing flyers because I forgot my cheater reading glasses so had trouble picking up the front sight. The gun is fitted with the smaller Mod 85 rubber boot grips and even with the pinkie coiled around the bottom of the grip, shots were easily controlled. This gun is EASY to shoot with .357's, I believe, because the barrel sits quite low and the recoil comes back more into the palm of the hand than up and out. My older .357 mag is quite a bit larger, heavier but the barrel sat up quite high and the recoil flip was actually heavier. It is as compact as any J-frame and I am obviously quite pleased with my purchase. The trigger? Taurus triggers seem to get better and better. This one is quite smooth and short in DA. Pulling quick shots did not draw hits off the target. Yes, it's a keeper. It is finished beautifully in polished stainless, unported and I'd recommend one to anyone interested in a compact .357 revolver. Thanks for the opportunity to share.

Forgot to ask a couple of questions:

Since you shot both 38 and 357 mag, which shot to POI?

Did you get porting or not?

I'm leaning towards stainless and non-porting.

It's non-ported and .38 spcl POI

Hello Bacchus: The 38's I shot showed much better more predictable groupings because: 1-better ammo (GA Arms) and 2- less recoil/muzzle/gap flash and 3-better repeat shots. Weighing in a 24 oz, it just sits right there so easy that you can fire all 5 rounds on quick double action into a pie-plate-sized target at 7-10 yards. I did not consider porting because I am not generally going to be shooting full-pressure .357 loads in a self-defense situation and there is probably enough energy loss in a 2" barrel as it is. Again, the shortness and crispness of the double action trigger on this particular Taurus is amazing. I think it is a best-buy for it's particular niche (compact .357 revolver) and recommend Taurus revolvers highly. This is my second Taurus revolver and the first one (M85 Ultralite) was creampuff also.
