Well I took my brand new DSA FAL “Kit” gun to the range today, and man I am so stoked. First I would like to say, this gun looks like it is brand new, inside and out, not like it’s from a kit. The Type II rcvr I got is perfect, the Parkerizing is even and very nice looking charcoal grey. The bore looks to be new, never used. The fit and finish rivals my VEPR II irt quality and looks. I am very happy with this gun and for the price I paid, I couldn’t have built a better rifle.
So I went to the range , max range 50 yds at this particular location. I used a mix of 2 full size silhouettes, 2 50yd small cal rifle tgt’s and 1 100 yd small cal rifle tgt. These are the standard NRA tgt’s. I was shooting NATO 7.62x51 Malaysian FMJ’s (headstamp: MAL 9-85 7.62). I got this ammo for .15 cents a round and it shoots really clean and is pretty accurate in my CETME. I contend this Malaysian stuff is as good as Hirten’….
I have shot an FAL before, but just some familiarization firings, not trying to do any accurate tgt shootin’. So I cued up the silhouette tgt first and elected to go for the “Head shot”. I placed the tgt out at 50yds. Set the sight to 200(lowest/closet setting). Gas system set to 4.5, as it came from DSA. Allowed the tgt to stop swaying and loaded up a full 20rd mag of the Malaysian. I aimed for center of the head. Fired my first shot, pretty good, left 2 inches of dead center and just about 1 inch high. Re-aimed and fired again. Still left of center but down ¾ of an inch. On the third shot I really took my time and looked at the sight picture. Noticed that the entire front sight was visible in the rear peep, the” “needle” and the “Y” of the front sight. Squeezed off my 3rd shot. A kiss off of my second shot, still left of true center but down ¼ of an inch and dead on in alignment of center to the “east”. Total group 1.5 inch. I was very impressed with the gun and the ammo!
My friend(range owner) came in and explained the FAL sight system to me as he is somewhat of a FAL freak. He showed me how to properly orientate the front sight into the rear peep circle, so I re-aimed for the center of mass of the silhouette. Fired the first shot, in the 10ring at the 1 o’clock position, ¾ of an inch from the center of the coveted “X”. I was stoked. My friend reminded me to calm down, concentrate on my breathing and squeeze the trigger. He knew I was excited about my new baby…..So I did and fired shot 2, BAM---just slightly left of “X” center. I almost crapped my pants. Calmed down, re-aimed an squeezed off shot 3, down ½ inch and right ¼ inch of “X”. This group finished out at 1.5 inches. 2 consistent 1.5 inch groups in 6 shots(my first six mind you) with surplus ammo. Granted, I know this was only 50 yds, but I feel that this is damn good for my first two attempts.
Next my friend recommended some aiming drills, so we sent out a 50 yd small cal rifle tgt, the one with the 5 black circles. My friend told me to just try to place 1 round in the center of each tgt. So I started with the upper left circle, squeezed of the round- 7:30 position on the inner edge of the 8 ring. Moved to the bottom left circle, shot- 8:45 slightly outer 8 ring circle. Moved to center circle, shot- 6:30 center of the 8 ring. Moved to the lower right and shot-7:00 edge of the 9 ring and finally moved to the upper right circle, shot-3:30 inner 9 ring. This was a very effective drill and I was becoming more comfortable with the sight system.
Ran a boresnake through my rifle 3 times and sent out a new tgt. Same kind, 5 circle, 50 yd small cal rifle tgt. Did a 4 shot group on the center circle only. Managed to get a 1 and 1/3 inch group in 4 shots.
So now my friend told me to run out a 100 yd, standard tgt. Set up for a 3 shot group and took a lot of time, practiced my breathing and sight picture alignment. Squeezed off round 1-6:00 o’clock edge of the 10 ring. Shot 2- 5:00 o’clock just in the nine ring. Shot 3-split to two first shots in the middle for a ¾ ich, 3 shot group at 50 yds.
The rest of my firings were a couple of 10 round semi-rapid firings to get the feel of the beast in a “flaming presentation of lead and power!” Damn that was fun. Total rounds fired in the session, 18 aimed, deliberate shots and 20-30 rounds of semi-rapid fire mayhem, blow the crap out of my remaining silhouette’s head and stomach! This was pretty impressive. This is as good as I do with my Glock during rapid fire drills at 25 yds……
I love this rifle, it shoots as good as you could want and is very accurate and fun to shoot. Very good quality and function/fit. DSA, you have created a fine gun for a very reasonable price. I am truly glad I purchased this rifle. I must also give props to the Malaysian surplus ammo. When I got home and cleaned my rifle, it was really clean! This stuff is accurate and very clean, especially considering it is surplus, mid 80’s production. I will definitely buy more. If you are in the market for a FAL, this is the ticket, you won’t be disappointed. Here is my beast and the dead tgt’s!
