Range report: Beretta 87 Target

So bought a new one yesterday just because it seemed like a fun, good thing to add to my collection, particularly now that my 14 year old daughter and wife are showing more interest in shooting.

Took it to the range today, my first time with a 22.

First, the ammo came in these cute little boxes and was almost free. :D

Shot 100 rounds, very precise and accurate gun. Couple of misfeeds in the first 20 rounds but those cleared out, basic break-in I'm sure.

Very minor griefs:

The mags have a bit of a sharp edge on the lip that gets annoying after loading them a lot.

The checkering on the grip plastic sides is way more aggresive than it needs to be, as in too sharp.

I wouldn't mind a tad more length on the grip. Maybe fixable with aftermarket, haven't researched yet.

Gun shot great right out of the box.

After 100 rounds, I installed my ATN Ultra-Sight (red-dot) on the built-in rail, had it sighted quickly enough and the gun was nothing short of spectacular (for my shooting skills) for the following 100 rounds. Range maxes out at 25yds though.

Then I put it down because I unexpectedly became the owner of a Colt Anaconda, but that is another story.

Quite a transition, 22LR to 44Mag though :D

One more minor gripe: literally broke (snapped) 2 hex tools, including the factory supplied one), trying to remove the front weight - a step needed for basic field stripping.

But in summary, this is obviously a top-quality target gun that I am glad to own. It will pay for itself in ammo costs in no time.

It's great to have a .22LR handgun in one's battery, if nothing more than to take advantage of the cheap ammo. My little Ruger MKII has seen a dozens of bricks of cheap .22LR and keeps on chucking. It's also been the first handgun many friends of mine (and now current NRA members) have had experience with.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, and even more pleased that your family has expressed interest in the shooting sports (you must be doing something right).

About those hexhead weight screws, maybe try some anti-seize compound on the threads (most auto supply stores sell it for plug threads).

Thanks, I'm really happy to own this seemingly unpopular gun - shot a few hundred more rounds since, zero troubles.

Already offered it to my closer range buddies for whenever they need something for family and friends.

And the local store sells factory ammo in 500-round packs for under $10.

Definitely a neat thing to have for myself and others, every collection should have something like this.

But I am going to have to do something about those plastic grips!

I almost bought one about 1 month ago. Since I didn't know anyone who had one or heard any good or bad reviews from anyone that experienced it I passed. After hearing your report I may consider it when I can get up some money.
