Range report: 2 Remington R1's

I took both of my new R1's to the range yesterday. A standard and a stainless. And I couldn't be happier.

They both functioned perfectly and shot great. I put 50 rounds through each. I tried the factory mags and some cobra mags. The rear sight on the black one was s little off, it was a little to the left and so where my groups. I just cleaned it today and knocked the sight to the center. The sight was pretty easy to move, maybe a little too easy, but I expect it will stay put with normal use.

These are some great looking, feeling, and shooting guns. I am very happy to own them.:)

Thanks to everyone for helping me talk myself into them.:D

Good to hear they finally got it right. Wonder if Freedom Group will be successful dumping their firearm companies.

Mellow, i too have a blue and a SS R1, the stainless is my favorite and a flawless shooter taking much of the shooting pressure off of my original 1911 and 1911A1 pistols. The SS has at least 500 rounds of ball digested and rings the 25 yard steel all day long. I think you will have many years of enjoyment out of these quality shooters.

I do not understand "finally got it right". I have one I bought in the early days, and as far as I know the R1 has always been right.

Mellow C. If you still find that rear sight moving after your adjustment, you might contact Remington and see if they will tighten it up under warranty.

If you choose to do it yourself, I know some have drifted their sights out and dimpled the sight track with a center punch, hitting it hard enough to raise some metal and drifting their sights back in. Others have used hi strength Loctite to secure the sight, but I would imagine that would be a real pain should you ever have to remove the sight for whatever reason.

Although I am primarily a Colt fan, I really like the looks of the Remington, and am thinking about trying one out. I hefted one in the LGS and the trigger pull was pretty nice out of the box.

Remington themselves pulled the gun entirely until the fixed all the problems, they just recently re-released it.

Thanks everyone.

David. Good idea. I'll have to try a few things like pressing on it real hard with my hands, or lightly bumping it against a random something, as well as put another couple hundred rounds through it. If it moves I'll ask them to fix it under warranty. Given I've only got 2 years I'd better get started:)

Glad you got them mellow c, I made it to Sportsman's with 10 minutes to spare before they closed and both models were available. The salesman said he would be happy to complete the purchase even though they were closing. In one week I have spent $600 on a Saiga and another $320 to go in on a gun with my parents for my brother so I didn't do it. 15 minutes into the drive home I was kicking myself as I realized I would have been able to make money on that R1 just about anytime I wanted to.

Bill, for future reference, how do you recommend I go about bending a dove tail sight?

Targa, that is truly a sad story:(

Remove the rear sight and stipple the flat underneath to better hold sight, the edges of the dove tail are sometimes "bent" down slightly to grab the sight better. It does not take much to grasp the sight tighter. Sorry Bill, could not hold back:)

I also took advantage of the Sportsman's Warehouse Memorial Day sale on the R1. Kudos to them for the great price and for having plenty in stock. Kudos to Remington for such a nice 1911 and the $75 mail-in rebate (or Storm Lake barrels, good through the end of the month).

I got the blue model and am impressed with the fit, finish and function. There's nothing as good out there for the money. What a great basic 1911A1!

Way to go Quentin2! I agree, these are some great basic 1911's, just what I was looking for, especially for the price.

I'm not sure if I will go with long triggers on them. I don't mind the short triggers, but I would prefer longer ones. Plus I think a couple solid long triggers would look great on them.

Now I'm trying to decide if I want to polish the flats of the slide on the stainless one. They make such a great pair as they are, but polishing the flats could give it a real great look. Maybe add some wood grips with the Remington "R" medallion in them as well.

Mellow_c, I bet the stainless R1 would look great with the flats polished carefully! The blue R1 looks fine with the satin finish, even side by side with my 1976 Colt with high polish flats.

I like the A1 trigger and other A1 features but it's interesting Remington chose a flat mainspring housing. I guess that's why they call it the 1911R1. My old Colt is a true 1911A1 so has the arched MSH which I prefer in the hand but love the look of the flat one. I'm going to shoot/compare them many times before making a change. I did order a blue barrel bushing to replace the stainless one.
