range of Mini 14 and Mini 30

I can hit aa 8* paper plate at 200 yards iron sights with the mini-14. The 7.62x39 round isn't accurate past 150 yards,so I hear. The .223 is better in my opinion. High capcity mags are plentiful for the mini-14.Stay with PMI,that's the best after market mag for the mini-14. Reliable high capacity mags for the mini-30 are unknown to me except for the Thermold 30/45 round mags that seem to be very expensive and scarce. If you want a 7.62x39 get a SKS-D/Sporter model. This gun takes the AK mag. A way better value and a lower price tag of the mini-30. Plus the rugged 30rd AK mags are $10 a piece new.

I can hit a 12inch piece of paper every time even with a hot barrel at 300yds. I put a few holes in a 6ft target at 500yds. I have one of the better Mini 14 rifles out there and I would guess the true Effective range is probable around 300-400yds. The Mini 30 is limited to the ballistics of the 7.62x39 round. Your going to go from shooting bullets to dropping bombs if you try and shoot anything past 200yds. The .223 bullet is much flatter and is easier to hit a target at 300-400yds. And I mean man sized targets.

The NATO standard 5.56mm ball ammunition is rated accurate to 300m. It is good out to 600m in volley or section fire. I have fired a bit of military and commercial .223 cal and I will concur with the 300m remarks. I have not seen the results from greater range although the British found the round to be insufficient at long range during the Falkland thing. It just does'nt have the stopping power of a .30 cal cartrige at long distance. Most likely due to the light bullet.
Tight Groups.
