Range of a shotgun

What would you estimate the range (distance shot will travel, not effective distance) that a 2 ¾”, 3 dram, #8 shoot will fly?

An investor has approached me about converting one of his old and very large warehouses in to an indoor clay range. Yes I know there are many more issues involved (lead, ventilation, report, and roof  ) but this was the first of many questions.

Thanks,

I had this same question for a while now. Thanks for asking it. I was thinking that if your gun is at 45 degrees vs 22.5 degrees might make a diff too. I would think most clays you'd be shooting at less than 22.5.

I'll be checking back for sure.

SAAMI has info on the max range of shot .I don't know if it's available on line. It's also going to involve the structure .You will hit the structure with pellets to some degree ,perhaps you could do a test to check it out .That would make more sense than the max range.

I can tell you that the indoor pistol range I frequent has a LOT of holes in the ceiling from noobs that don't know that your firearm is supposed to be pointed down-range before their finger touches the trigger.

Good luck to you and your investor friend. That's risky buisiness. Make sure you get a good insurance policy. It won't come cheap.

I use to dove hunt with several other guys in a huge square field. Id say it was 300yds by 400yds with a pond in the middle. we would all get on the perimiter of this field with as many as 16 people being out there. Needless to say it wasnt uncommon to get showerd upon with shot from across the field. At that distance it felt like someone throwing rice at you. however everyone still wore eye protection.

RE: the image above- 600yards for buck? 1200 for slug!?!??! WTF?

I would say 75 yards max effective for buck and 150 for slug.(Maybe more for slug if you have optics and rifled barrel)

not effictive range

The graph is mearly distance.

So if you aim your gun at 45 degrees and fire, maybe your slug will go that far.

Well, I can tell you the trees at the local skeet range are about 250 yards off and you can hear the shot showering them pretty good.

75 yards for buck? Um...

At 75 yards a 00 buck patern is already 10 inches or so. Further out than that you will be missing the target far more than hitting it. YMMV

BTW, that fact that those trees are still around after years of being hit by those pellets ought to tell you something about how much energy the pellets still have at 250 yards.
