Range Bag Recommendations

My range bag right now is a soft-sided thing I picked up at the local Target department store... it was intended to be a tackle box for fishing. Has a large compartment 6" wide by 6" deep by 10" long, with a couple of pockets on the sides and a shoulder carrying strap. I can typically stick a couple of pistol mags, a couple of centerfire rifle mags and a couple of rimfire rifle mags in it along with about 200-300 rounds of ammo depending on if it's rifle or handgun... plus a brick of .22.

When loaded up as such it is very heavy and the strap bites at my shoulder.

I want some more capacity in the bag. I want something that has enough room in it to go take a week-long class at Frontsight or Thunder Ranch or something. Something with a pocket in it for a handgun or two. Something that cleanly holds magazines so they aren't just loose and bouncing around.

I want it to be well supported inside so it doesn't just cave over in the center from the weight of the contents.

If it has room to hold spent brass separately from good ammo, that's awesome.

Basically, I want a sturdy compartmentalized dufflebag.

I saw a 5.11 bag at Shooter's World in Phoenix today that would have been perfect... except for the freakin' $100 price tag on it.

Sorry, it ain't luggage. Just not gonna pay that much for a range bag. I can maybe see $50 or so.

I keep my ammo in MTM/Dillon reloader cases, or in factory boxes... it isn't all loose and floating around.

I don't own gun rugs for my pistols... I tend to use holsters if I want my guns in something.

Looking for something 8-10" wide, 8-10" deep and maybe 18-20" long and well organized.

Suggestions from TFL?

I'm looking for something along the lines of this:

5.11 Range Ready Bag... $120 MSRP

Or this:

5.11 3 in 1 patrol bag... $69 MSRP

But, closer to the $50 price point.

MidwayUSA's bag is what I have. Don't think you'll be disappointed. If you don't find it on their site, hollar at me and I'll post the link. I paid under $50 two years ago and it's one tough bag. More compartments than you can shake a stick at. Has dedicated mag compartment like the one you posted. Two removable pistol pouches. It will hold a lot of weight....a lot.

Go to Amazon.com and do a search for shooting bags. They have a good selection of bags from different manufactures to look at and very good prices.

Ordered the Midway one Tuttle mentioned... also got an AR rifle case that I've been meaning to get.

Looks like midway is back on the "stab you in the back" shipping philosophy. $21 just for shipping.

I did complete the order... $90 for an AR case and a new range bag after shipping is still cheaper than that 5.11 range bag on its own, especially since tax would have been another $10 on top of it.

It don't cost no $21 to ship me two pieces of curdura nylon shoved into a box, though. I only ordered because they had the price slashed on the bag from $60 to $40.

Check out Klein or Plano Plumbers tool bags. Made out of canvas, vinyl bottom, some have pockets, can get them from 16"-20" long. Shoulder strap can be added, I used an old army surplus equipment strap that worked just fine. Advantage is it doesn't scream gun bag.

I use a plastic tool box

Hi,
my "range-bag" is a plastic (some polymer or another) 20" tool box.
it comes with a tray that sits on top.

I never need to walk with it more than 20 meters, so I find it very convenient.
Cheers,
Danny

I use a 16"-18" soft tool bag from Home Depot. It will carry everything except long guns. I have a regular range bag by Bagmaster but like the tool bag better as it is stronger and more heavyduty. It has traveled to Frontsight with me.

"I have a I-shot pro shooter, and love it. Great value for the money."

+1 for I-shot. Great customer service as well as value. After a few years use one of my 'brass bags' stitching was loose. I called to ask about repair and they sent a new one on that day.

Regards,

The Midway bag is unbeatable for the cost, size, quality. You couldnt go wrong with it and I think it is one of the cheapest ones out there.

I'd have to agree with Mick on the Midway bag. I just ordered another one from Midway because they are such a good deal. They are on sale for $39.95 thru the end of August so I just had to take advantage of that. Great bag for a very reasonable price.
