Range ammo for .45

I plan on taking my p220 elite stainless to the range this weekend, any recommendations on range rounds? Reloads ok?

Also, unfortunately the wood grips are a little chunky for me I would like to replace them with aluminum grips like the ones that came on my p226 elite dark. Are there any other manufacturers out there besides Hogue?

I generally use Winchester White Box 230 grain full metal jacket ammo for range use.

I also replaced the wood grips on my P220 with the aluminum grips which I purchased from SIG. When I bought my gun and registered it on-line they gave me a discount code which I used for the grips.

WWB is good range ammo as is Remington, Federal, UMC and a plethora of other cheap brands. If I'm just throwing lead down range, I'm not real picky about it.

Whatever is the best buy is good range ammo. I try to buy my ammo at auction and have had moderate success keeping the cost within reason. Today I was shooting with a new shooter and after the range, went to Walmart to get him outfitted with gun cleaning equipment and while there, found a smokin' deal on Federal 100 round boxes of .45 ACP....perfect for the range. Bought all they had in stock.

Some of the cheaper ammo of late has been very dirty but then again, if you clean your gun after the range, who cares? It's all about getting the most bang for the buck.

FWIW, I have found Remington to be more inaccurate that other similar priced ammo.

My range and target loads are a 200 gr lswc with 4.0 gr of bullseye, very reliable and accurate.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for asking our advice.

Why would they not be OK?

In my opinion, reloads are practically required for range ammo.

Best thing is to use a copper plated lead bullet (much less expensive than jacketed, but can be pushed faster than lead and don't lead up your barrel) the same weight as your carry ammo and load them up to the same point of impact as your carry ammo.

Of course, $30 for 100 rounds Venom1956 found is hard to pass up. When I found Remington UMC on sale a couple years ago, I bout 1500 rounds (all I could afford) and have been re-using the brass ever since. But the price I got for the loaded rounds was less than I could buy the components for elsewhere.

Wally World has Federal 100 r d box for $29 in my area. It has the smaller primer. I've had no problems with it but have to use different primer to reload. Otherwise I reload Hornady 230 gr FMJ, 230 gr XTP and Nosler Custom 185 gr.

I have had good luck with UMC, Blazer Brass, and Winchester ammo for targets. That being said I don't buy much ammo anymore. The only guns I shoot regularly that I don't reload for are my Mosin-Nagant and SKS as I can buy ammo for both guns for just about what I could load it for sometimes even less than I could load it for. If you are not reloading your own ammo and plan to shoot a lot you should very seriously consider buying a basic setup to get started. The initial cost is a bit high for quality equipment but it pays for itself in a short amount of time.
