Randal Service model?

A guy at work want to sell a Randal Service Model .45. It has been fired on and off for a few years, but has not had a large number of rounds through it. It comes with one original mag and a couple of McCormick 10 rounders. He does not have the original grips, the weapon has Colt rubber grips on it. Is this a good buy for $500? What is the reputation of these pistols for reliability as a carry gun?

I bought one used in box back in late 1980s, a very well made and reliable firearm. Though I read some letters in Gunzines magazines that either early or late model ones were not fitted too well, function was not what it should be. Mine is good, never had a feeding problem nor is it finicky on what it eats.

This gun has been the basis of a research firearm that shoots .44 caliber 145 grain to 220 grain bullets at 1100 to 1500 fps velocity, ate everything put through it and not a burp.

If you buy it...hope yours is as good as mine.

My uncle owns one in stainless and I have shot it a few times. It seems of good enough quality, but did jam here and there. It might have a bit of collectors value, and I believe there is one for sale in the for sale area...but for $50 more or so you can get a NIB Springfield 1911. I say look for a better price if its to shoot.

Have one of the LeMay versions. Bought NIB years ago. Have run a lot of rounds through it. Accurate, reliable, really nice trigger.

Have no idea what the going price for them is.

I own two Randalls and they were advertised as the only stainless steel .45 fit for duty. I have a full sized service model with adjustable sights like a Colt Gold Cup. I also own a Commander sized and they are wonderfull pistols. I checked my Blue Book and you are getting a good price at 500 bucks. They are also collectable. I used mine as a LEO duty weapon for several years and it performed flawlessly. Mine will never be sold.

Hello. I don't own a Randall, but fired quite a few in the past. All were accurate and reliable. I have about 12 Randall magazines and they work very, very well in my Colts as well as Springfield Armory and Kimber. Best.

Uuuuuuhhhh, Steve, hows about selling off a couple of the Randall mags? Kidding, sorta. I have found my Randall magazines are the best ones I own. They seem to be better made than most of the ones on the market today.

Try http://www.randall45.com for info, if the site is up. I have not been there in a while.

Thanks for the info! We did some horse trading last night, he wouldn't come off the $500, but I got 5 magazines (only one Randal though), 3 diferent holsters, and a couple boxes of hardball. Now I need to get some range time in! And Jim V, thanks for the link, cool site.

You are most welcome,

Jim of Many Links strikes again. LOL

Hello, Jim V! No, can't really do that since they work flawlessly in ALL my 1911s regardless of make or model! Should something unexpected come up, like I lose my mind or something, perhaps I'll remember your post and sell 'em. Best, sir.

Thank you, Steve. I should have bought more Randall mags when the company was still around, but how was I to know they would be gone? Rats. The magazines I have are the same, feed anything in any 1911 and keep on running.

Luckily I bought several extra Randall mags to go with my pair of guns and you are right they are the best mags that you can find.
