Raising the min handgun age from 18 to 21...

Why are GWB and Gore planning on doing this? And where can I get more info on what they're proposing?

I turned 18 almost a year ago, and I thought "Well, atleast now I can finally get into handguns"... but it looks like both canidates will curtail my plans :(.

If passed will this bill be retro-active? Meaning, if I buy a handgun now, will I have to forfeit it when the law is passed, or can I keep it? Or, does it just apply to sales, and not (home, range) possession?

Heaven forbid my young blood shoots tin cans and paper... oh the humanity!

Spamizbad,
First thing, Welcome to the Forums! The idea that at your age, you can join the military, and be trusted with a select fire weapon, but can not be trusted with your own handgun is absurd! I guess that in the eyes of our Government, people under the age of 21 have no need, or right, of self protection. Of course, in the eyes of the sheeple, a 19 year old with a handgun would just end up "gang banging" or shooting up a school. You can thank Hollywood, and the main stream Media for this.

My youngest daughter, who handles a handgun quite well, just turned 16. Until her last birthday, I was prohibited from allowing her access to any of my firearms, by State Law. Now she can't own a handgun, for her own self protection, for 5 more years. All the politicians talk about, is "protecting our children", yet they forbid them the means of self defense. I better stop now before I go off on a rant!

I hope you are registered to vote. Until my Libertarian Party becomes a viable alterative, you basically have a choice of Gore, who would outlaw ALL handguns, or Bush, who may be persuaded to do what is right for the young adults of our nation. Get out Tuesday, and Vote Freedom First!

Go figure.

You can own a handgun (at least in Georgia) at the age of 18. However, you can't purchase one until you turn 21. What kind of sense does that make?

GusGus, I don't know where you are, but my daughter, now 19, has had access to a firearm, since she was 12, she was qualified to handle.

Remember the two children who were killed by the California Law which required that their father's gun be locked away from their 14 year old shooter sister?

Fred (Pampers),
People's Republic of NJ! Anyone allowing access of a loaded firearm to a minor (under 16), is in violation of NJS 2C:58, punishable by up to 5 years in jail and a $7,500 fine. Conviction also carries a MANDATORY 3 years without parole. "But your Honor, how was I suppose to know she figured out the combination to my safe?" ;)

Glad that I'm past 18. Way past. Maybe a way to approach this would be to bid/barter. If your considered a "child" until 21, then push to be draft/tax exempt until 21. Children should not be sent to fight wars unless you volunteer with your parents permission anyway.

Not being able to purchase a firearm or drink alcohol until your 21 (legally), but getting shot to protect our oil interests or whatever, is certainly not fair.

Yes, I am that Spamizbad :)

Yeh... isn't that something... I can't own a .22 handgun but I am free to serve in the military and Fire an M16, MP5, etc.

Whew, I can't believe how tough some of those laws are. I remember my dad telling me he bought a .44mag revolver off a guy when he was 16. Now there's no way in hell you could do anything like that.

I'm not in one of the DPRs. Even had I been, I'd much rather have faced a jury for allowing my daughter access to the firearm, than paying for her funeral.

the age limit in CA has been 21 for a while. If they are doing it to help prevent crime it sure as hell aint workin here. Their reason is this: Statisticly violent crimes involving firearms are committed by people betwwen the ages 18-24. Too bad most of the firearms that are used in these crime are obtained illegaly anyway.
