First I want to say a Big Thank You to all the members of this forum, for their patience and williness to help a beginning gunsmith. I will probably never do this for a living but I like to work on my own stuff. I have found a gunsmith locally that was thrilled to have a apprentice and with over 50 years experience. Allthough he had never built race guns and mostly done repair work, his knowledge is priceless. He help me do all my trigger work and safety checks. Everything else I did on my own. It has been test fired and it works PERFECT!!!! :D I couldn't be happier for my FIRST complete build from the ground up.:D Please let me know what you guys think, good or bad. I still have to take off the sharp edges and refinish the frame. Probably will do a parkerize finish.

I think I got it!

Looks GREAT!!!!!! How about some details on the build? Parts used, build time, lessons learned, that sort of thing?

Are you going to do any slide lightening?

Details

Sti trubor barrel, Sti classic slide , Sti recoilmaster , chambered .38 super , Allchin scope mount and c-more scope. All parts come from Brownells. Built on a springfield armory frame. I had bought the Springfield for $450 and decided to build a .38 super out of it since I have 2 other colt .45's. I learned so much that I can't explain it all. I had to cut the frame for the wilson ramped barrel (never done one before). The barrel was short chambered so I had to ream it (another first). Change and tune the new ejector ( yet another first for me). Total cost for the project including the purchase of the Springfield .45 is around $1600 -1700 not total the receipts yet could be a little more. Build time was about a month or so, but didn't work on it everyday. So approximate 40 -60 hours so far. I am going to lighten the slide but not sure exactly when or how. I was really surprised how flat it shoots. Thanks for nice comments.

Slide fit

I called Sti and they said that anything over .010 would look ugly. I ended up with .006 fit. I order a base pad for std clip I had (not extended) and I screwed it up trying to fit it. They said to file it on top and on the taper. I took to much off the top and ruined it. I think I will find me a couple of 170mm long any way.

I forgot to mention fitting the extractor. I noticed it needs to be blended with the back of the slide. Before you blend the back of the extractor be sure the barrel is not putting pressure on the claw area of the extractor.

Good Tip, I hadn't thought of that. I don't think that it is but I will check before I blend it in, Thanks. I didn't see any marks on the extractor from the barrel hitting it.

I like to fit my slides and comps .004 to .006.

I've seen shooters using the Dawson mag well on Para guns and cutting other basepads to work with the Dawson well. This does not seem to be the best set-up, as more than once I seen the modified base pads fatique and break dumping the the ammo, spring and follower in the dirt.
Every shooter I've seen this happen to tries to stick a new mag in the gun thinking their mag fell out; the new mag won't fit because the old mag tube is in the gun.
This sure blows the heck out of their time when running a good stage.

I like to use S&A mag wells on Para double stack guns because they work with all base pads including stock base pads without modifying the base pads.

Are you going to put a slide racker on the gun?

What type of finish are you going to put on the gun?

As I said the super's looking good.

Yeah, I probably will put a slide racker on but haven't done much research on it yet. As far as the finish goes I haven't decided yet, leaning toward a parkerized finish.

It's the factory Springfield Armory parts in the frame, didn't change anything in the frame except the ejector. My Mentor Gunsmith done a trigger job and ended up with a 3 1/2 lb trigger pull.
