Rabbit hunting in Southern California

Does anybody know a good place to hunt cotton tail in Southern California? My three kids have shown an interest in hunting and I thought rabbit would be a good place to start.

I used to hunt the cotton tails along the railroad tracks near the little town of Casmalia (just north of Lompoc) when I was young. All you really need is some public land that is covered with brush and not close to buildings. You should check with DFG on season and limits too. Before I left Cali, they had put a season and bag limit on cottontails but the jacks were year round and no limit.

thanks for the tip. I've been scouting a couple other areas but nothing has panned out. The hikes with my kids have been fun and full of small adventures and thats what really counts! I did get the bag limits and season dates, its just trying to find the cotton tail :) thanks again

With kids another easy idea is to take them 'plinking'. Just use one gun & keep an eye on safety. Find some out of the way public land & have at it.

I didn't know I was playing "plinking" all this time! I actually have done this so they could get used to the idea of maybe walking a few feet then aiming and shooting. But of course when all else fails we will go back to our game. lol thanks for the suggestion.

I found a great place for Cottontail at Topaz Lake just on the border. In October there is nobody at the campground and there's a bunch of rabbits out in the morning running around on the beach and hill by the campground. Got some big German Browns too but I'm not giving up the secret on that. :)

I know, I know the season ends real soon. im trying to squeeze a day or two for the kids :)
Thanks for all the tips!! I keep making calls to different areas but no one seems to have seen the rabbits. I do hear to ask some land owners that farm. I understand they sometimes are a nussance to the farmer.
I wont give up!! thanks again for all the inputs.
