Qustion about reciever face trueing

Can anyone point me to some diagrams or video explaining the purpose of trueing the reciever face on a rifle? I have limited knowledge about accurizing but I can understand machining the bolt face and the back side of the bolt lugs but I can't visualize what is trued on the reciever. Is it the mating surface for the bolt lugs?

Truing the receiver face is part of "blueprinting" an action, i.e. machining it so it is true to the original design and dimensions as specified in the original drawings. As far as truing the receiver face, it is intended to make the receiver face true and square to the centerline of the bolt bore. The receiver face is the mating surface for the rear of the barrel shank. If the barrel threads are cut tight enough to just barely fit into the receiver, the barrel will be held true to the centerline of the action by having the receiver face true.

No, but that is also part of blueprinting an action.

OK, I have a savage 10fp and have read about swapping barrels, using the go/no go guage and tightening the barrel nut at the proper dimensions the barrel shank probably won't be touching the reciever face...right?

I'm guessing in the case of a Savage then those two mating surfaces dont really matter?

In the case of Savage rifles, the front of the receiver is the mating surface for the barrel nut, which can cause misalignment of the barrel if it is tightened off-axis. The face of the receiver still needs to be trued.

Ditto the nut, but it's less imporatant than the face of the receiver.
