"False is the idea of utility ... that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils, except destruction of liberty. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes ... such laws serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." -- Thomas Jefferson, 'Commonplace Book', 1775

I take great comfort in the type of men and their thinking that resulted in the founding of this country. I, particularly, like the above passages for their unflinchingly clear language and meaning. I don't know why I kept coming back to it tonight, and I sure that it's not unfamiliar to people here, but I felt the need to post it. Maybe I'm just sick and tired of yet another story of a gun related tragedy.

Do people have any favorite quotes, like the above for me, that they care to share?

”Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.” —Unknown...

"The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms."
-- Samuel Adams

"Suppose you're a member of Congress. And, suppose you're an idiot, but, I repeat myself." -- Mark Twain

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

That's a great quote that I've never seen before.

Do not separate from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, bastardized form of illegitimate government. - James Madison

" Put your trust in God; but mind you to keep your powder dry"...Oliver Cromwell mid 1600's during the English Civil War - 'Ireland Campaign'.

and...

..."Eat what's in front of you, next meals breakfast"...MOM early 1960's :D

A nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools.

Correction

I'm chagrined to find out that the above passage WAS from Thomas Jefferson's book; however, Jefferson, himself, was directly quoting a passage from Cesare Beccaria's Essay on Crimes and Punishments. It was not Jefferson's original writing. Sorry folks. I didn't do enough due dillegence. It's still a darned good passage though.

A great passage supposedly stated by Cromwell to his troops during the Ireland Campaign as he and his soldiers were getting ready to cross a river and meet their foe and was often quoted throughout history by other 'men of great power'...

...including my dad, when us boys were going out on a Friday night. ;)

Too, the passage in your OP is one of the best I've ever heard.
Thanks for sharing...and...

...here's another...

"A little rebellion now and then is a good thing." Thomas Jefferson

This is one I remember and constantly reminded myself as we were raising our four children.

Happy Holidays to you and yours.
