I am only 18 years old but am really eager to learn about pistols and shoot them.. I went to my local range and the guy said the only way I can on a regular basis is if my dad goes to the class and gets his pistol permit then I could go with him.. Is this the only way? Could I own a pistol myself at the age of 18?

I live in CT btw.. Thanks

When you hit 21 you can buy your own handgun. '

Look at the bright side though.. you know you want to get into guns and shooting.. You have 3 years to save your money instead of spending it on crap like android phones, name brand clothes, and other junk.

Save your pennies..and in 3 years..you may have enough to buy an assortment of handguns.. Instead of having to lay-away like some of us around here.

I don't know CT laws, but here in PA you can be given a handgun by a parent and it be yours. You just can't purchase one for yourself.

Again I am not familiar with CT laws, hell I'm not even familiar with all the various laws of PA. That may be something you can look into though, just google the laws for your state.

I'm not familiar with your state's laws either, but I can suggest this: You are wise to want to learn about guns, and you should therefore be reading everything gun-related that you can get your hands on. Some excellent places to start would be SWAT magazine, and also American Handgunner, along with GUNS magazine. Then there are the books that you can find at your local Books-A-Million and Barnes And Noble stores, usually in the Hunting or Sports sections. Also, I recommend doing a lot of regular shooting with pellet rifles and pellet pistols as you wait for that first firearm. This will help you get a good grasp of the basics, as in sight picture, sight alignment, and trigger control. Just remember to always follow the 4 basic rules of gun safety every time you handle anything with a trigger on it!

P.S.: ...And if you don't already know, those rules are: 1] All guns are always ''loaded,'' that is, treat them as if they're loaded, even if you know they're not. 2] Finger off the trigger until you're on target and ready to fire. 3] Never allow the gun to point at anything you're not ready to see destroyed. 4] Know your target, and what's behind it.:)

Pistol range time for the 'under 21 crowd' in the Army or in the Marines is no problem. You might get luckly and have a M9 issued to you before you turn 21. They will even throw in the holster & some ammo.

Darn! Do I make a good Recruiter or not?

Thanks for the responses guys!

Idk the laws in CT but my dad has decided to take a pistol permit class and the guy at the store told me that he can give me a few private lessons and after that he said my dad can buy a pistol under his name and he will let me shoot it at his range! woohoooooo! M1911 here I come!!!

Sources...

If you want to train or fire any weapons, I'd suggest these sources;
The NRA, www.nra.org , a local gun-rifle club, or join the US Army Reserve/CT National Guard. You can become a veteran, get military benefits & learn more about firearms-weapons. In the USAR or CT National Guard, you'll only be on active duty a few weeks per year. www.usar.mil

Just be aware that in Connecticut you cannot (legally) transport even an unloaded firearm from your home to the range without a permit. This means your dad is not only going to have to buy the permit, but also go to the range with you to shoot.

Hey, quality father-son male bonding time. What's not to like?
