Just got my permit in the mail so now thats its legal for me to carry its begining to feel a little surreal any of yall have the same type of reaction when you got your permit in.

Yea, it is strange at first. Always checking to make sure your not printing, or it comes out of the holster, afraid it will go off, etc. etc. Take the required trip to Wal-Mart.

I remember the first time I came face to face with a cop, I turned slightly to my right to give me more cover. Now, that was surreal. After awhile one will find yourself naked without it...........................ck

Been there, done that. At first, you'll be SURE everyone can see your weapon. The more you carry, the more relaxed you'll be with it. Believe me, out of 100 people you meet, maybe 5 MIGHT THINK you're packing. The "sheeple" just aren't aware.

Out of 10 who positively make your weapon:
8 will think you're some type of LEO and ignore you.
1 will be a BG who suddenly decides it's the wrong day to rob McDonald's.
1 will be another carrier who will smile to himself and think, "Today I'm not alone."

If you carry properly no one will ever be SURE of your weapon. So what if the butt prints...it's a vaguely rectangular shape under your shirt. Could be a pager, cell phone, pocket reminder, etc. Unless you're wearing Speedos, no one will really KNOW.

DON'T make an excessive effort to protect or hide your weapon.
DON'T make goofy faces or silly smiles (unless you do this normally).
DON'T hitch your pants up by the holster.
DON'T keep pulling your shirt down on that side.

In other words - ACT NORMALLY.

You think you're self conscious - you shoulda seen me the first day I open carried in a NC Wal-Mart. No one even noticed that I know of. No pointing, no stares...and I tried to be VERY casual - like, "What gun?"

And last but not least... new CCWs sometimes feel the need to flash a bit. I don't understand the psychological ramifications of that... but don't do it.

Concealment is deception... deception is advantage.

Congratulations.

Your state has granted you the privilege of exercising your right (that's pc, ain't it?) ;). (IMHO, we all need to emulate Vermont).

I've had mine since Texas decided to go the CHL route. Like many here in Texas, however, I've carried something for most of my adult life. While technically illegal, I've never known of anyone (law-abiding) to get in any serious trouble for doing so before the CHL laws were passed. But then, as my wife frequently reminds me, I don't know everything.

You'll soon become accustomed to it and, the more you wear it, the sooner.

Best,

Will

Completely normal. Took me about a year before I felt like it was just another tool on my belt.

It gets to be a drag after a while.:p

What state do you reside in?

Yeah, I had that feeling for a bit.

It's a lot of power, a lot of responsibility. And it belongs to every American (or even to every man on Earth) as a birthright.

At first I kept checking to make sure it was there and I always felt that someone was looking at it (just because your paranoid doesnt mean that they aren't out to get you). Then with a comfortable holster and time it alls feels good now. I don't let my situational awareness slip just because it feels comfortable.

I understand / and me too - and I think its a good thing. Its not good to be too "cowboy" or reckless about it.

Lots of good advise here. As exciting as it is when you start, keep your cool and step into it cautiously, and take your time evaluating your carry options. It will take awhile to find your prime carry option, but eventually it just becomes part of your routine. I actually have to remind myself if I intend to wear one of my "Quality" holsters - otherwise morning autopilot has me out the door with my cheapie IWB and pistol in place.

I think its good that you're taking it so seriously, its a big responsibility and maybe just carrying for short periods, maybe going for a walk, is the best way to get you used to it.

last thing you want is to be face to face with a cop, sweating, stuttering and shielding your right side.

Congrats, now cover it up and take a stroll to Walmart.

One you arrive, you'll think people can see it but as mentioned above, most people are unaware of their surroundings. Pretty soon, you'll have passed your first CCW test.

Give yourself a couple of months, but it becomes very much second nature.
