Quick .308 question..

Ok so about what game could the .308 round take out..
Im looking to see what kinda game i can go for with my .308..
I dont wanna like end up going elk hunting and end up
haveing to shoot the thing 100 times to take it down..

I was just wondering what game and around what range
the .308 maxs out at for hunting..
 
It will work well on anything in Cali that's for sure. Just make sure you use a hunting bullet. The Heavier the game the heavier the bullet.
 
308

308 is a great round, I have taken deer at 322 yrd with a winchester sup 150gr. for the most part the round will out shoot the shooter unless you are brown bear or big moose hunting I think your going to be fine

It is adequate for any game in North America as long as you know its limitations and use it within its capabilities.

No one can tell at what yardage beyond which you can not shoot and kill a specific game type, assuming you hit it in a vital area. The variables are so numerous as to make it a judgement based on the circumstance at the time. Experience makes that possible ... and you aren't going to get that on a gun board.

Moving to the Hunt.
 
It is really hard for a shooter to be consistent beyond 300 yds without LOTS of practice. 200 yds is even pushing it for many people. Sight your rifle in for 200 yds. Know the proper holdover for a 300 yd shot. Use a quality hunting bullet and you'll be set for any game in your area.
 
Shot placement is what kills the animal, not the caliber nor the amount of powder it's got behind it...

1,200 FPS in 150 grain bullet out of a 30/30 will drop an elk, just like a 300 grain slug traveling 2500 fps out of a 460 Weatherby Mag. But the Weatherby will take out more meat on the way through.......

Shot placement is paramount. If you can't shoot it where you want to shoot it then do what many do and get a bigger gun.

I personally think that 308 you have is a great hunting weapon.

You are right shot placement is the key, but to make a blaket statment of caliber dosn't matter is just wrong. Someone who knows nothing about guns/caliber or hunting is going to go out and with a .223 for Elk, NOT A GOOD IDEA.

yea thats exactly what im just checking..
im not looking to shoot at anything beyond 250yards..
I just wanna make sure if i take the shot it will put the thing down
See so as PRONE2 said.. now i know not to go and look to take out
big bear and moose haha but i just wanted to make sure i didnt go for a animal and the bullet just wounds it and doesnt take it out and i get in trouble.. And feel pretty dam bad haha
 
The only critter in the States that I would not feel comfortable shooting with a .308 would be the big bears. I would have no problem shooting moose or elk with one.
 
The 308 is GREAT

With 150s, deer are toast to 350. I'd use premium 165s for Elk and limit my shots to 200. Don't listen to that dribble about 1200fps with a 150 reliably killing an Elk. Data from hunters, guides, and media over more than 30 years has settled on an impact velocity of at least 2000fps with a controlled expanding bullet in calibers from 270Win to 340 Weatherby.
 
Any thing walking in the lower 48. How is that for an answer.:D, Yes shot placement is the key. Just us the right bullet/ammo for the game.
 
308 loads

150 Grain TSX will kill any deer in North America.

180 Grain TSX will kill any Elk in North America

the shot placement, and your confidence using that gun matter the most.

under 200 yards you are about as good as it gets. Low recoil and great

accuracy compared to these new magnums is to your advantage. The "Flinch

factor" is noticable when you see these folks at the range shooting from a rest

with a light rifle and a large load. Jack O'Connor killed every animal in the

North American Continent with a .270, your .308 is a better gun. Shot

placement is everything.
 
k thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure to make i didnt get in
over my head with bigger game than my rifle could handle. :cool:
 
I've killed 5 elk with my .308 using either 180gr Barnes or 180gr Fail Safe. That .308 will do the trick. It's the only hunting rifle I own - there just is no need for another.
