Questions on CETME and G3 Clones

I'm looking through my Federal Arms Catalog. They actually have DS Arms STG-58 Authentic Austrian FALs for $795, as well as offering a line of Olympic Arms AR-15s. I'm willing to bet that the DS Arms FALs are better than their "sporters" that are parts guns.

They also have a bunch of G3 clones. Now, it's nearly impossible to find a genuine HK G3 these days. Here are the G3s they have.

G3 Sporter Rifle .308
Used parts in very good condition assembled on FA91 aluminum receiver. Assembly by Century Int'l Arms. Includes one 20rnd mag. Furniture is black US made synthetic. Scope base machined into receiver. $485.00

G3 Sporter, Stainless Steel Receiver
Use parts in very good condition assembled on a Century Int'l Arms cast stainless receiver. Assembly by Century Int'l Arms. Includes one 20rnd magazine. Furniture (buttstock and pad, pistol grip, handguard) is black US (Century) made synthetic. $595.00

G3 Rifle, Sheet Metal Receiver

Used parts in very good condition assembled on a Hesse Arms sheet metal receiver. Assembly by Century Int'l Arms. Includes on 20rnd magazine. $695.00

They also have a CETME

Semi-auto .308 CETME Rifle

New!...Never before has this rifle been available in the US market! The Rifle is manufactured with all BRAND NEW PARTS from the Famous Spanish CETME .308 semi-auto rifle. Each rifle has beautiful wood furnishing that look and feel like fine hand polished and oiled teak. Includes on 20rnd magzine. $489.00

So, assuming I had any money and desperately wanted a G3, would any of these be worth the money, or are they all just crapola?

I had one of the Federal Arms aluminum receiver clones. That was one ugly gun and it shot way too low. I sold it and got a Special Weapons SW3. Special Weapons and Todd Bailey has many detractors, but I like mine. Very nice fit and finish and it hasn't malfunctioned or jammed once in over 1000 rounds. Works with both HK mags and Thermolds and it's consistently accurate. SW doesn't make them anymore so you may find one on the used market, or a new unfired one. That's the only clone I'd recommend. Obviously, an HK91 is the way to go, but they're expensive.

Avoid the Hesse sheet metal receiver QA/QC reasons and I really don't like the Federal Arms cast aluminium version. The Special Weapons cast stainless receiver (both CETME and HK version) seems to be pretty good. A typical problem with all of these mass produced clones is a canted front sight (actually canted at the trunion) which must be dealt with by the assembling party.

Hm.

Well, I would love to get the special weapons clone, but it's no longer in production.

Looks like I might just wait and get the FAL. Too bad, I really like the G3, but I'm not going to spend 500 dollars on a mediocre rifle.

the hesse and federal i saw at my local gun store looked like parts guns which is what they are.junk. and at 600 and 800 respectivly what a waste of money.ill take a brand new (Factory) AR for that kind of money.

Perhaps.

Federal Arms has their FA-91 with integral scope rail for $485.

But I won't be buying an AR at any price. I've had two, I'm bored with them.

Some SW distributors might have the last of the production SW3 rifles still in stock. Try calling Bullseye in Lawrenceville,GA.; they had a couple recently, might still have one (not cheap though; around $1,200). These last SW3s have the Portugese FMP receiver.

An Interport G3 is also a good way to go; some come up for sale on the the HK boards once in a while. Usually around $1,000; FMP receiver,HK & HK contract parts and a couple of SW parts.

Nah.

I can get a DS Arms genuine Austrian STG-58A FAL from Federal Arms for $800. It comes with bipod, magazine, hard case, lifetime warranty, plus it's DS Arms, they make good stuff.
