First off, thank you for your service and bravery. Very few have the courage to do what you have done.
I'm currently writing some short stories for a college project, and I wanted to get some information from those who know and faced combat. Movies and so on are great, but they tend to be over dramatized and glorify war. From my interviews with some local vets as well as just reading about old conflicts, it's of course as far from the truth as possible.
War is messy, chaotic and downright terrifying. First off, I'd like to know how some of you felt when you first went into combat, how did you cope with loss, what kind of tactics did you use when confronted with various obstacles such as snipers, MG's or even the loss of a brother (or sister) in arms? As times have passed we've seen dynamically different wars pop up, from jungle warfare in Vietnam to urban building to building clearing where the enemy can be anywhere or anyone.
Mentally how do you cope with this and what tools did you use to combat this (namely gear and small arms)
Again, thank you for your service, you are all heroes in my book
