Questions for Mauser guys. Fn commercial Mauser...

Hey there. I picked up this Fn Commercial Mauser a while back and am trying to determine exactly what I have here. Here are the details I have been able to find and I have some questions to follow so bear with me. The rifle was made in Belgium, late 1948 and imported by Firearms International. It's chambered in .270 winchester, has the FN 1948 stamp along with the Firearms International crest and logo on the reciever. The barrel also has made in Belgium and Chrome vanadium steel. So it is an FN barrel as well and has the same looking proofs as the FN Browning bolt rifle on the same era. It has the original walnut stock with ebony grip cap, leather sling and pachmyar swing away scope mount with a unique weaver k4 scope that has a german reticle and brass rings on the edges. Also the turret caps are externaly not internaly threaded. The scope is still clear and bright. The rear sight has a 3 leaf flip up sight that is really cool. The safety is on the bolt. The reciever looks to me like a c-ring not an h-ring and the rear of the reciever is smooth with no hump. Can you tell me if I'm correct about it being a c-ring reciever? I think I am looking at the right part by my online search. Here are some pics. Anything else you can tell me including opinions on value? It's in very good condition and the only thing that may devalue it a bit is the reciever has been drilled and tapped for a swing away mount that is mounted on the left side. I guess the holes could be plugged if it was a big deal. I'm either going to keep this rifle as is because I think it is a cool old rifle with character or I might make it into a project custom rifle. Not sure. Let me know what you think.

I have been working with Mausers for some time and I have never heard of C ring or H ring on them. From what I know about the FN Mouser they are the same as the K98 but without the stripper cut in back. as for Value. I would have to see it to tell you.

A nice looking commercial FN. It's hard to see the stock in the pictures but it may be a high grade with the express sights. Does the receiver have the thumb cut out on the left side? Some of the 47 and 48s have them. by 52 the safety was moved off the bolt. if it is one of the high grade rifles it should have a value in the 7-1200 dollar range depending on the condition and finding a buyer who knows what they are.

Here is a 47 in front with a 52 action in the back.

SCOUT RIFLE MAN, from my limited research the c-ring they are talking about is a single cut in the reciever for the extractor? This was standard till @ 1950. After this time for ease of operation the manufacters built rifles with a double cut which resembled the letter H. However I am far from knowledgable on this subject and await there reply.

30-30remchest, I must say I have never seen the H cut on a Mauser and it one of my favorite actions. Now that I have heard of it I will be on the look out for it. Thanks for the info.

Nice Mauser. It is a C-ring, not that it makes a bit of difference. I believe the forend cap was added, but maybe not. The holes can be plugged with screws and peened over, don't try to weld them.

Value for FN commercial rifles runs $450-$700-ish for a good condition piece, a bit more for a great example.

my commercial fn is in 244 rem. and was made sometime after 1955 as the 244 didn,t come out untill them, i have not shot it yet. i paid 300.00 for it at auction, where it was marked a 98 mauser rebuild. sold the cheap scope on it for 50.00,so i have 250.00 in it. i mounted the burris 4x12 to sight it in. eastbank.

Scorch I was hoping you would chime in thanks for the answers. I might leave the swing away side mount alone if it doesn't give me accuracy problems, but if I change my mind down the road I was wondering if you could give me a little more details. When you say peen the screws over I would be worried about marring up the reciever. How would you go about properly doing this? Eastbank cool rifle I got mine at an auction too.
