Questions about Remington 700 LTR

Hey guys,
Been looking through the old posts about the LTR and pretty sure it is what I want for my first bolt gun. Most likely, shooting over 300 yards will be a rare occurance. I have a few questions..

The first one is a dumb one, I am confused on how they designate calibers, is the .308 bigger than the .270 cartridge? The reason I ask concerns recoil. Whats the recoil like on a .308? I have shotten a bunch of .270, and a bunch more of 30-30, and even some 30-06. Just curious how it compares.

The second question concerns optics. The gun will be used for some whitetail and coyote hunting, and ocasional long range shooting. I like the idea of the mil-dot system, or even a scope with a BDC. I really like the idea of the BDC built right into the scope, and possibly with a lighted reticle. I like the idea of a higher powered scope, but don't want to go to high so as it restricts the hunting capacity of the gun. I have heard alot of a good about Luepold, and some stuff about Springfield Armory. What do you guys recomend? Also, any other general information about scopes and optics would be great. Stuff like sunshades, target turrets, stuff like that. I don't know much about that sort of stuff.

Lastly, I'd like to see some pics! I would really like to drool over some nicely eqiuped rifles. THANKS!

1. Yes the 308 (BD of .308) is bigger than the 270 (BD of .277).
2. Recoil depends on many factors. All other things being equal (weapon weight, same bullet weight), their is little difference in recoil.
3. Buy the best scope you can afford. I prefer Leopold. The more things that are in the scope, the more that can go wrong. I would recommend a fixed 6x or a 3x9 for the type of shooting you have listed. Never had a use for lighted reticles or BDC. Learn where your rifle shoots with you hunting load and save the money for more ammo.

I think you'll find the recoil mild for 308 LTR depending on ammo an stuff. A 30-06 should have slightly more, a 270 about the same or less. I have an LTR and am really happy with it. no pics from me but do a search from the tfl menu for "700LTR" and you will find several threads that are recent, including pics.

The .270 is a 30-06 case necked down to .270. The powder capacity is more than the .308( a shortened 30-06 case). Both are mild recoiling rounds. There are more choices of .308 bullit weights and loads. The LTR is an excellent carbine. Some people around here regularly shoot 1000 yds with them.

It is a very accurate and handy rifle. Most seem to like bullit weights in the 155 gr. range.

I like the 3-10x magnification range in my scopes. Don't suggest the 50mm objective lense though. If you are shooting 300 yds and under you do not need a MD reticle. The Leupold Duplex works well and cluters up the image less. You can use the plex for range estimation.

Good Luck!
