Questions about HD/CCW

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and I think I have found my favorite new hang out spot. I have a few questions I'd like opinions on.

I have read in several places to ONLY use factory loads for home defense/CCW, because people think that if you show up in court and the defense proves you had a 'hot hand load' in your piece, that maybe you WANTED to shoot someone. My line on the thought is that if you take the time to work up a self defense load and you can actually hit with it and you are more confident in it than factory, that it proves you are more concerned about the safety of those around you, and that would be a good arguing point. And as they say, better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Secondly, I am thinking long and hard on getting an XDM, and I know that they both come with 2 hi-cap mags. On a similar note to above, I have also heard that if you shoot someone and have 30 or 40 rounds of ammo on you, they can argue the similar point, that you were out wanting to shoot someone.

What are some thoughts on these topics?

Welcome...

the handload story has been floating around for a while, BUT the way the "ambulance-chaser" are it be better to use over the counter ammo as there's always the chance of your handload failing @ wrong point in time.

No info on the XDM, more preferred the classics.

Yeah, I am sort of old fashioned in my gun tastes as well. I would imagine I will end up with an XDM one day, but I want to wait till they're not so new and the price comes down some. I'd say my next buy is going to be either an SP101 or a Browning BL-22. My small but growing collection includes a Win94, a Marlin 1894c .357 lever gun, a Marlin 60, a Win 100 .308, a poke stock 20g, a pump 12g, and a Ruger GP100, and I am also about to add a custom Mauser. Something about the new fangled guns makes me feel funny. :)

My main question in the 2nd topic is more about carrying a lot of ammo than about the XDM specifically though.

You can use handloads. Better make sure you really understand what you're loading, and have the ammo loaded to "spec" -- which means it's all uniform dimension and is going to reliably fire in your chosen gun.

I have an AK with a 75 rd. drum mag for home defense. I carry it in my vehicle and it's the "camp defender" when I'm out in the woods. The prosecuter can argue until he's blue in the face that you're a "gun nut" and "looking to shoot someone." The fundamental purpose of an AK-47 is war. It's a good defense gun.

It's YOUR job to ensure that when/if you end up in court for a self-defense shooting, that it's a justified self-defense shooting.

You can reliably plan on your computer being subpoenaed in court and someone will go over your files to find your posts on sites like this one. If you're "looking to shoot someone" it's going to come out in court.

If you're defending yourself with lawful use of lethal force, that's going to come out in court. It's not going to be a toss-up about gun and ammo choice.

The best reasons to use high quality factory defensive ammunition:

1. It is that it is extremely reliable.
2. Experts at the company that makes it spent a lot of time, money and testing making sure it will perform properly.

If you are ever involved in a shooting you can expect every aspect of the case to be picked apart and shoot you end up in court the lawyer that is trying to hang you will use anything and everything to their advantage, including painting you as somebody making ammunition specifically designed to kill or maim, blah, blah, blah. I always recommend finding out what your local LE agencies carry and getting the same brand in the appropriate caliber/weight for your gun. Good enough for them, good enough for you.

Factory Ammo

I only use commercial ammo produced by an American manufacturer because of the reliabilty. When I pull the trigger I want to hear a bang not a click. I don't care what kind of ammo you use, in most cases, you are going to court.

If you could prove that target (target being a piece of paper at a legal shooting range) shooting was a sport or hobby of yours then having hand loaded ammo and mass quanitites of ammo probably wouldn't hurt you. Having a hand loaded defense round? Hmm... I don't hand load myself so I can't comment on my own loads, but I wouldn't use a handload from someone else in my HD gun. That's just cause I've heard a couple more stories about hand loads not going bang than factory loads. I'm no expert in the subject, it's just MHO.
