Questions about CMP M1 Garands

Ok, I've got a few questions for you CMP savvy folks out there:

1. I should be receiving my C&R liscense very soon...I can use this to buy a CMP M1, right?

2. If not, how is the transaction handled?

3. I've heard a lot about Danish M1s lately...I see that they're actually cheaper than the "Service grade" by $100. Since that's true, I'm assuming that their not as desirable? Why is that? Which rifle (Service or Danish) should shoot best and be in the best shape?

Thanks!

Why don't you just check out http://www.odcmp.com for complete information?

I think the C&R license would just allow you to forego the background check, but wouldn't do anything about match/military and affiliated club requirements.

Whether you have a FFL (any type) or not, the M1 is shipped to your door, with no stops in between. Just try to be home when they arrive, or risk them being left on your doorstep all day.

It's a good deal, go for it.

Steve,

Having a C&R (even if it does negate requiring you to fill out "yellows"), does not relieve you of the shooting and club membership requirements of CMP. You still must qualify by their standards......

Re Danish vs. Service Grade. Both are USGI rifles. The only difference is that the Danish rifles have spent some time in the armed forces of Denmark. During that time, the rifles may have had minor parts replaced, had stocks of European wood put on, or may even have had a complete arsenal rebuild, complete with the addition of a brand new Danish VAR barrel.

Both rifles get the same type of breakdown and armory inspection by the good folks at CMP. Safety and function are both verified. Both are then test fired before being boxed for shipping.

Re parts: You may see a Danish rifle that has come back to the US with all the original US parts intact. Most likely not. Not to worry though.... the parts the Danes used to fix their US made M1's were either made by themselves or by the Italians, BOTH of which made EXCELLENT M1 parts. If yo are lucky enough to get a Dane with a Danish VAR barrel, count your blessings. Most M1 lovers consider the VAR barrel to be the most accurate military barrel ever put onto the old warhorse.

The difference in price comes from the "snob factor", in that M1 collectors want all US made rifles & parts and don't care for the "furrin' parts" on their Garands. If you jsut want a shooter, you can't beat the Danish.

One last thing... All other things being equal, the Danes are going to be pretty well covered in grease and or cosmoline from storage. You will have a LOT more cleanup work to do with a Dane before you will want to take it to the range. Also, the stock may be pretty well beat up. That can be fixed with a couple hours work. See the guys over on the Culver's page for techniques on turning a "beater" M1 stock into a real beauty..... I've done it a couple times now and am really pleased with the results. One Dane I have that came looking like it had been drug behind a pickup down 10 miles of gravel road is now the prettyest piece of wood in my safe.

My opinion,

An 03 FFl does nothing for you at CMP. They changed their policy several months ago and everyone goes through NICS.

No offense intended Destructo6, but FedEx is not supposed to leave it at your door. CMP says the mode of shipment is "adult signature required". I had my last one shipped to my parents home, becuase no one would be here. Boy was Mama p***** because FedEx came when she was taking a nap :D. It was all worth it in the end just to see my oldmans 87 year old eyes lite up when he saw what was in the package! His first words was "damn that may have been one of mine!" When he handled it you could see he knew what it was all about.

Okay, stoopid question time

how does one become affiliated with a club? Yeah yeah, join one. Okay, I figured that...what amount of work/involvement is required beyond just joining? For eligibility for CMP Garands, I mean?

I love to shoot, and do so quite a bit, but I get to do it at my PD range (read: for free), and my free time is severely limited.

TIA,
Mike

Coronach,

Two requirements to order a rifle from CMP.....

First, you MUST be a member of a CMP Club. Check with your state shooting association. Usually they affiliate with CMP. Next, check your local ranges for any CMP clubs nearby. You can also check the CMP website for local club info: http://www.odcmp.com

Second, you MUST be/have ONE of the following to qualify for ordering rifles, ammo, parts, etc. from CMP.

1. Shoot a qualifying match of 50 rounds minimum at any CMP shoot.
2. Have Honorable discharge papers from US Armed Forces.
3. Be a Senior Citizen at least 60 years of age.
4. Be a badge carrying LEO.

Full details at the CMP website.

Hope this helps,
SwampyMO

I know FedEx is supposed to get a signature, but twice they've left such packages on the doorstep. Pretty scary, eh?

Destructo6, I would complain to Fed Ex and also let the CMP know. I received my three Mossberg M44's yesterday, took less than 3 weeks. The Fed Ex driver came by my house twice and no one was home so he called the daytime phone number that was printed on the label to see if he could meet me some where. Luckly I only work 2 blocks from Fed Ex and I picked them up there.

I hope its not too much longer until I can get the Garand on order.

They've not left any rifles on my doorstep (though I've heard of it happening), but last week they left a couple cases of ammo on the front doorstep. My UPS guy thinks I'm some nut, and being that all of my neighbors are a little nutty themselves, I don't blame him for being afraid to knock on my dark and musty door. I especially don't blame him when he hears the rythmic clank of my 550B churnin' out more ammo!

I love my Dane. Get a Dane and you'll have a weekend's worth of joy getting the gunk off. My Dane was a SA with a five digit serial. It shoots awesome with a VAR barrel. I just wish there were a commercial outlet selling VAR barrels that didn't get used by the Danes. I'd buy a couple of them for replacements.

Thnaks guys. The EOD Guy brought up what I'd seen on ODCMP.com I'm already shooting in CMP matches...no problem there, I have a DD 214 with Honorable Discharge on it, and I'll be officially joining a club next month. As stated earlier, I'll have my C&R real soon, as well. However, odcmp.com concerned me with ne short blurb about them not taking a C&R any more...so how do you get one now...go through a dealer? That sucks...maybe I'll stick with my M1A.

WOW!!! Destructo6 that is scary, just leaving it on the doorstep! My bet is that its the driver screwing up (or being lazy) and not wanting to make a return trip.

steve you do not need a FFL or a C&R to order from CMP. They take all your paperwork process it run your name through NICS and ship the rifle to you. Its the only way I know that a private individual can mail order a rifle, of course you have to send in the notarized paperwork to be eligible and also pass the computerized background check.

Delivery drivers get lazy.

UPS left my Rolex (returning from factory servicing) on the porch!!! I was living in downtown San Diego at the time... drunk bums stumbling past about every 5 mins.

Yes, reporting it missing to UPS for fraudulant insurance claim definately crossed my mind.
