Steve,
Having a C&R (even if it does negate requiring you to fill out "yellows"), does not relieve you of the shooting and club membership requirements of CMP. You still must qualify by their standards......
Re Danish vs. Service Grade. Both are USGI rifles. The only difference is that the Danish rifles have spent some time in the armed forces of Denmark. During that time, the rifles may have had minor parts replaced, had stocks of European wood put on, or may even have had a complete arsenal rebuild, complete with the addition of a brand new Danish VAR barrel.
Both rifles get the same type of breakdown and armory inspection by the good folks at CMP. Safety and function are both verified. Both are then test fired before being boxed for shipping.
Re parts: You may see a Danish rifle that has come back to the US with all the original US parts intact. Most likely not. Not to worry though.... the parts the Danes used to fix their US made M1's were either made by themselves or by the Italians, BOTH of which made EXCELLENT M1 parts. If yo are lucky enough to get a Dane with a Danish VAR barrel, count your blessings. Most M1 lovers consider the VAR barrel to be the most accurate military barrel ever put onto the old warhorse.
The difference in price comes from the "snob factor", in that M1 collectors want all US made rifles & parts and don't care for the "furrin' parts" on their Garands. If you jsut want a shooter, you can't beat the Danish.
One last thing... All other things being equal, the Danes are going to be pretty well covered in grease and or cosmoline from storage. You will have a LOT more cleanup work to do with a Dane before you will want to take it to the range. Also, the stock may be pretty well beat up. That can be fixed with a couple hours work. See the guys over on the Culver's page for techniques on turning a "beater" M1 stock into a real beauty..... I've done it a couple times now and am really pleased with the results. One Dane I have that came looking like it had been drug behind a pickup down 10 miles of gravel road is now the prettyest piece of wood in my safe.
My opinion,
