Questions about 870 please help

Howdy folks, I plan on getting a shotgun sometime soon and the thing that I am interested in is this:

Now for all of you that know something I don't, can you please tell me if "Fixed Cylinder" chokes can be used for slugs, buckshot, and skeet? I would like to use this for home defense, skeet, and also have it at a range so it would be a tack-driver for slugs. Also, I do not really like the look of black stocks, are there ways to get the wooden ones and how much do they cost? I am sort of new to shotguns. Thanks.
 
The Open Cylinder or the Improved Cylinder are the preferred chokes for buckshot and slugs.

Since I don't shoot skeet, I don't know what the preferred choke is for that.

As to getting a gun with wood stocks, but a short barrel, there are a number of ways to go.

One is to buy a Express Combo Item number 22571.
This is a wood stocked Express with TWO barrels.
On is a 26" vent rib barrel with screw-in chokes so you can use it for any shotgun sport or for hunting.

The other barrel is a 20" Improved Cylinder barrel with rifle sights.
This is THE perfect barrel for slugs and buckshot.

Another option is to buy any Express gun, then buy a spare short barrel for it.
Short slug and buckshot barrels can be found reasonably easy.

Yet another option is, buy the synthetic gun you linked above, then trade the synthetic stocks with someone on this board who has wood and wants synthetic.

Last, you can buy new or used Express hardwood or Wingmaster and Police walnut stocks from Gun Parts, Brownell's and on Ebay, fairly cheap.
 
Thanks for info, but sadly I can't afford extra barrels and stocks :'-(
I won't be as picky so I guess I will have to stick with the original gun I wanted because I like having 6 shots loaded in one mag instead of 4 like on all the other guns. Now what is a "fixed cylinder" good for? Thanks in advance for replies :D

The correct term is cylinder bore and there's no difference in diamater between the bore and the muzzle--in other words, no choke.

It will work well for skeet or HD. A skeet choke is actually between cyl bore and Improved cylinder. For bird hunting, the moderate amount of choke offered by IC is excellent for upland game birds, and is superior to cyl.

If by skeet, you mean a real skeet range, the cyl bore will be fine. If you mean throwing your own clays somewhere, a little choke will give you some versatility.
 
As long as you use rifled or brenneke style slugs, they will do wonders, sabot slugs are meant for shotguns with rifled barrels, the rifled/brenneke slugs are like the shuttle cocks in badminton, and do well with no rifling, where as the saboted slugs are smooth, and get a spin from the rifling in a rifled barrel.

get the 870 and never look back, its a great gun.
