My son is on the small side, less then 55lbs, so after looking at all the options I decided on the 243 for his first hunt (Deer). I have been working on shot placement and other shooting skills with him. The question is with various deer bullets, there are alot, is there any one stand out amongst them?
1. Winchester powerpoint
2. Corelockt
3. Swift Sirocco
4. Barnes
5. Nosler

All will be in the 90-100 grain catagory and will be used on Whitetail max weight in the 160lb catagory.

Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

My wife uses a .243 single shot on hogs and deer here in Florida. Over a dozen in the last few years, all with the Sierra 100 grain in Federal Premium. Tried Nosler at the range but the rifle did not like it. A friend reloads the Nosler for his rifle and has had exellent success with them. Seems to me that the Nosler penetrates a bit more but with either if you hit much bone it's not going through.

Idealy I'd like a bigger slug but as she's not very big we've found the .243 to work well. Shot placement and patience............got to learn to let some walk. Better to see them walk off with the chance of another day than to see them hobble off and not find them.

I've used the Core-lokt in .234 on a couple of deer; flop-dead. It was accurate and expanded well. Less expensive, too.

Winchester or Remington is what I'd stick with. No need for an expensive cartridge when these will do just fine. Just use what ever shoots the best out of your boy's rifle.

Thanks

My son and I did a little sighting in on Sunday. Rem CoreLoks a little under and inch w/ wind and snow. Next week we will be able to bench it properly and see what she likes.

Thanks for the replies
