I checked out a shotgun at my favorite gun shop today. I don't own one, mostly handguns here. It had a pistol grip and a caddy on the side to carry more shells.

Don't usually like shot guns much but I liked this one.

After some research, I think it was a mossberg persuader 12 gauge.

I have to wonder though- anyone shot one of these? with no buttstock that has gotta be brutal on the wrist. Whats the recoil like? Any rounds you can load it up with that won't do damage on your end too?

Would you recommend this for a first possibly only shotty? Its dedicated use would be home defense. And defense against gourds in the country during certain seasons ;)
 
My wife brought one of those home once. Replaced the PG with a shoulder stock pretty quick. I had a PGO for awhile, alot of fun to play with when loaded with birdshot, not so friendly with serious loads.
 
I just bought my second shotgun, which is for clay shooting, and am keeping my first. It's a Remington 870 12 gauge express originally purchased for home security and it came with a law enforcement speedload style fore arm, 18" open cylinder barrel and 2 shot magazine extension.

It has been my only oprating shotgun for nearly a year and knowing what I do now I would get a standard shotgun if I wanted one all purpose gun. Regular stock and a ribbed 28" barrel with interchangeable chokes.

That pistol grip on a Mossberg can make it difficult to reach the safety located on the top of the tang.
 
Those PGO (Pistol Grip Only) shotguns work better on TV than they do in the real world. Search the archives, there's oodles of threads on this.

Few experienced shotgunners own PGOs. No PGOs show up at 3 gun matches, no major shooting school will each you to run one.

IOW, they turn what may be the best close range defensive weapon into a large, hard kicking, hard to control and hard to hit with handgun.
