Question: Rifled arrel and buckshot...

Now, I normally don't like the idea of using shot in a rifled barrel. However, seeing and handling the judge had me wondering - would it work to use a rifled bbl in a shotgun with buckshot? Apparently in the judge the rifling causes the shot to spread out faster over a shorter distance. Could the same be applied to buckshot out of say a Mossberg 500A with a rifled barrel?

So basically it's the short barrel in the judge that makes it capable of clearing the entire length and not causing an obstruction?

Wow.

Man, that had to be ONE tough wad too get stuck in a barrel then still have enough substance left to block the bore enough to explode a barrel. DO you have any pictures of the barrel?

I've seen barrels that were ruined by stuck wads. With reloads, it's not uncommon for target shooters to have a blooper's wad fail to clear the barrel. Sometimes such a load can throw the shot well enough to break an incoming target, and the shooter isn't aware of any problems. It's the subsequent shot, when wad hasn't been cleared, that can be exciting. While I've never witnessed a barrel suffer catastrophic failure, I've seen several barrels made to look like a snake who just swallowed an egg.

Also, the rifling found in Taurus' Judge is relatively shallow...

But any kind of "shot" will still be imparted to spin, thereby opening up the group.

Yes, the photos and videos of the poor defenseless paper Shoot 'N See targets are show impressive damage...

But what would bird shot do to a guy wearing a heavy sweatshirt under a leather jacket...a guy who's also bent on accomplishing his dastardly deed of harming you or your family?

To ME, the Judge is the answer to a question that was never asked.

Don't shoot buckshot (or any shot) from a rifled shotgun barrel. Asking for trouble and at best, will get horrible patterns. The Taurus Judge is an abomination in my opinion which tries to do 2 jobs with one gun and fails miserably at both.

Yes I realize they used reactive targets to sensationalize the judge, but I was just wondering if, instead of buying an $80 barrel i could not hunt well with, I could use my rifled barrel for buckshot at ranges under 30 feet. Indoor use only.

Lee- Thanks, that was really helpful. I have a Benelli for bird hunting but I was hoping I could narrow it down to one just for simplicity. Also I was hoping for a little wider pattern since I don't have an cylinder choke (I do have full, mod, and imp) and thought maybe... But there I go thinking again and it's getting me in trouble (see others rants about the Judge :p)
