Question regarding AirLite Ti's...

Kentucky Rifle

I'll try and explain this so you 'smiths can understand.
I purchased a S&W #331 that had only been fired three times. When I cock the hammer to fire the little J-frame single action, it goes all the way back and rebounds off the lower part of the hammer slot just above the top edge of the grip. Naturally, it stays there until I squeeze the trigger. It only touches the bottom of the slot and it does not rest there. (I'm not talking about the hammer spur. It's the part of the hammer UNDER the spur that momentarily contacts the slot.) The hammer is begnning to leave a small mark and indentation in the aluminum. When I fire it double action the hammer gets nowhere near the lower edge of the hammer slot.
My question is, will this indentation/mark hurt anything or get bigger? Or will it just stop at some point? (I'd appreciate it if you guys (meaning women too :) ) who own one of these aluminum alloy frame pistols with hammers would take a look at the bottom of the hammer slot and let me know if the part of the hammer that's under the spur is making a small mark on the frame.)

G'day KR, and et al.,

I just had a quick look at mine. No such mark. I've fired SW SC TI a bit in both single action and double action. Perhaps you are having a bit too much fun with your thumb when articulating the hammer back?

Since mine is the 12 oz model, I've found that shooting it in double action mode is the least painful method of launching full house magnum rounds. 38s are ok either way. Shooting magnums in single action mode leaves me with a damaged trigger finger knuckle. But can that little thing shoot good groups!

Unless that mark gets bigger, I can't see that it would make much of an issue. However, if you're concerned give S&W a call. The good folks there can help you out. Cheers!

I've got the 357 Model 36 clone whatever it's called. Ditto on what Shooting4fun said. The Scandium launch platform makes it imperative that you fire DA or you will get a sore hand/2nd finger with magnum rounds.

My gun does not have the mark you mention but it has not happened on any Smith I've examined. I would send it back to S&W for warranty service if it bothered me.

Well, I called Smith & Wesson...

And I also posted the same question on the S&W forum. The people who have answered thus far have said I have no problem at all and the little mark will just get to a point and then stop. Like "peening", I guess. I did go get every double action revolver I own and look at the bottom of the hammer slot with a magnifying glass. Every single one had a mark where the bottom of the hammer (under the spur) rebounded. To tell you the truth, I definitely was NOT looking forward to having to ship the revolver off for service.
