Question Re: Winchester Ammo

Winchester makes another hollow point in 45 ACP besides their SXT round. It is in a white generic looking box labeled "personal defense" and sells for 14.95 for 50 rounds at a local store. Just a tad more expensive than their white box 230 gr. fmj.

Is this stuff any good? Does anyone have expansion or chrono data? My piece is a Ruger P97 with 4 1/4" barrel.

Thanks.

I shot several boxes in a class. It was less than a dollar more than target so I got it. I still have several boxes that I have not shot. I use Federal Hydra Shok for PD.

I never had any problems with it, and was accurate. As for expansion, I didn't check that. A web search may help.

It sure looks like it will expand.

I like it

I have used it in 9mm and .40 and was very pleased with the accuracy and reliability these rounds displayed. As a matter of fact, my Beretta 92FS is in my nightstand as I write this, and it is stoked with 115 gr. winchester white box hollow points.

I recently read a thread over on Pistolsmith.com regarding the white box Winchester JHP. The concensus among those several who had tested it against the SXT, & Golden Sabre rounds of comparable weight, found them to be as good at expansion .66in. and .67in in milk jugs and wet news paper tests. They pinted out that at Walmart prices, the white box was considerably less expensive and just as good a selfdefense round.

I have no personal experiences to cite.

I've shot a lot of the .45 whitebox JHP with 100% function and as much accuracy as I can appreciate in my 1911s.

It works, and I carry it.

"FIRST, MAKE A HOLE"

If it's accurate and reliable, and it looks like it MIGHT expand, then you're all set.
Oh, and you saved money (for more ammo).

9mm personal defense

In answer to the question on the 115gr 9mm loading, after I have fired it to prove reliability I did an informal test on clothing covered wet pack. Shot it thru a G.I. field jacket that was folded in half. I got expansion of .57 and .65 and penetration of approx 12". The round that expanded .57 hit one of the snaps on the pocket. It has proven to be accurate and reliable thru my G19 and CZ75B.

Agree with that guy from Vermont. ;)

The money saved is spent on running a lot of rounds thru the gun. It would take me months to function test one gun and three magazines with the high-priced premium loads.

The other alternative would be using cheaper FMJ from the get go, but if I'm going to carry ball based on economy of function testing (which I've done in the past), then I might as well get the possibility of expansion for the same price.

I'm sick of chasing The Magic Bullet anyway. Embrace shot placement, and be Free. :)

Here's the link to the tests on Pistolsmith.com, for those who are interested.

"I have the same question with their 9mm "personal defense" ammo...."

Winchester - Personal Protection
Federal - Personal Defense

The Winchester 230 gr Personal Protection JHP's in the white box from WalMart seem to be good.
They feed well, burn clean, and are quite accurate out of my guns.
I've only tried them in wet paper medium so far, but they seem to work as well as the high dollar stuff.
They sell here for about $16.95 for a box of 50.
I like them.

I've shot many boxes through my SIG P220 Sport & Stainless.

They are good rounds. I don't know the velocity difference between the JHP "white box" and the "premium" SD ammo, but it shoots great.

I have retreived some expanded bullets and they look just like expanded JHP should look.
