I've read some opinions that the round would be OK in a 3 inch barrell but might "over-expand" driven to the velocities that would come from a 4 inch or longer barrel. I don't know if there is any validity to that. I have read some early tests which included 4 and even 6 inch data (velocity, not gelatin). Gold Dots are bonded-core, right? Don't they have a reputation for not coming apart? If so, while they might over-expand a bit, they probably wouldn't fragment driven to higher velocity. Interesting question and I'm sure time will tell.
