Question on the RCBS Rock Chucker.

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a Rock Chucker supreme kit for some rifle reloading. I understand the kit does not come with "shell holders". Would the shell holders from the Lee dies work or do I need to buy RCBS shell holders?

Also, on the hand priming tool, do I need a separate shell holder for it too or does it use the same shell holders as the press does?

BTW, I've been reloading for a few years now on a XL650 and a Lee Turret press, however, I got rid of the Lee when the XL650 came along. Now I need a good single stage for my Magnum calibers and I'm starting on 300BLK.

Would the shell holders from the Lee dies work or do I need to buy RCBS shell holders?

Yes they will. When determining the difference between shell holders I measure the deck height, if the deck height is .125" there is nothing special about the shell holder. If the shell holder deck height is not .125" I sort the specials for special custom work.

The shell holder that will not work are made by Herter, then there are Lee shell holders that are made for primer installers and trimmers. \

The only non-standard (big press) shellholder that I've run across in 50 years is the
Lyman #14B for my 44-40 (it's thinner than the standard ⅛" deck height found on all
others I've used)**

'Had me going there when I first noticed the difference -- but that (the 44-40) is all I ever use it on.

Full disclosure: I've never used a turret press. Almost all my reloading stuff is RCBS.

Since you've used a turret in the past would you be okay with another turret?

I've been fascinated with the Redding T7 press.

It's a big, brawny press that seemingly would handle almost any reloading needs.

To my mind it's one I wish I would have bought years ago and maybe never had to buy a progressive.

Here's a review:
The T-7 was used to load the ammo with which benchrester Kyle Brown set a new 1,000-yard world record in 2003, and word on the streets is that the Redding T-7 is probably the best turret press available.

If the OP has, with the RCBS reloading kit, gotten the RCBS primer seater and not the somewhat more expensive universal version, he'll need shell holders for it. They are the same shell holders that the Rockchucker uses, but I highly recommend getting two of each of the shell holders for each caliber. You can get by with one shellholder, but once you've installed one in the primer seater it's a pain and a bother to disassemble the darn thing to get your shellholder back to use in the press. I finally just bought extra shellholders and the slight expense has made me a bit happier.

Yeah, this is the only thing you really need to look out for when using Lee dies with the RCBS kit, the Lee shell holders work fine in the press, but don't always work in the hand priming tool. Some work fine, others don't, not sure why.

I just end up buying a few extra RCBS shell holders and keep them in the box with the priming tool.

"not sure why" We are talking about the Lee shell holder in the RCBS Auto Primer, the same can be said for RCBS shell holders. I have three different RCBS shell holders, two of them will not fit the RCBS Auto Primer.

I have RCBS shell holders with no bevel on the bottom, I have RCBS shell holders with a slight bevel on the bottom and I have RCBS shell holders with the perfect bevel. The perfect bevel fits the RCBS hand primer.

The center holes in different brand shell holders vary slightly in diameter. This can cause issues with some hand primers that require a shell holder.

I don't have two shell holders for each cartridge I reload but I do for those I load most and it is worth the extra $$ in my opinion. When I bought my hand primer unit they did not have the universal one, if they had, knowing what I know now, I would have gotten it.

Allenj, I have a two ram Herter press, by design it is set up to size on one ram and seat on the other. When forming cases the two ram press with two matching shell holders shines.

Then there are the green and red Lee boxes of shell holders. In the old days a reloader could not beat the 11 shell holders for less than $11.00.

I also have the RCBS R/C , and the short answer is yes the RCBS and LEE shell holders are interchangeable. I use both RCBS and LEE dies and they all interchange. The LEE shell holders will also accommodate the RCBS R/C's "flip lever" primer arm setup.

Road_Clam, I am just trying to get a visual of a flip lever.

That's not the primer arm configuration that I have with my R/C press. If you go here : http://www.rcbs.com/RCBS/media/RCBSMedia/PDFs/Parts/Parts_Book.pdf
then scroll down to the "Partner" press p/n 87460 , you will see a different "flip lever" type primer arm. That's the style I have. I'm wondering if both styles of primer arm are interchangeable within all the single stage RCBS presses ?

I have a Partner press, I do not use it but just in case. Then there is the Reloader 5, it has the same primer system as the Partner. I use the Lee or RCBS auto hand primer systems.

I have Pacific presses that use the same priming arm as the RCBS. For the larger primer arm the press must have a slot and cross pin. Not all RCBS rams have the slot in the ram, it is special order.
