Question On % of Energy Used on AK FAL M1A SKS.....

Does Anyone know any approx. Percentages of gas used in a Semi Auto Rifle to push the bolt back? I was curious about this because I know the FAL can be adjusted and I was curious about how much energy is diverted? Could you Hypothetically close the gas piston and use all of the energy for a longer more powerful single shot? Would it increase a rifles range ? Maybe something like the range of a 7.62x39 round could be effective 100yds further?

Very small!!!

Theroretically you could gain some velocity, but I'm sure it would be less than 50fps in a 308 class round, you would not gain any additional range at all.
I've done the experiment before with a FAL, and muzzle velocity whas only about 20fps more. I've checked 308 reloads in a FAL, an M1A, and a bolt action with a 22" barrel, and all had more of less the same initial velocities.

The gas port on the FAL is quite small. Ruben has already done the experiment, but (no offence to Ruben) logic says that the port is too small to decrease the speed much, even when fully open. (Obviously about 50 fps, according to Ruben)

I recently did some chronographing of loads in my FALs, and there was no noticable velocity different between having the gas port all the way open and closed. In other words, any different due to the gas setting was subsumed by the "normal" round-to-round variance.
