Just received my new M700 P direct from Remington, 40x trigger ,weird thing is though the barrel looks like it has a silver sleeve where the rifling is , new cost saving process?? Thanks for any insight.

Here are some pictures, Im sure its not a sleeve or lined, kinda looks like it though.

Looks like the crown was cleaned up by hand with an 11 degree cutter after the original didn't satisfy someone like an inspector.

Nothing wrong with that barrel. That's not a liner just a clean crown. Should be kept that way for best accuracy. That is the last part of your barrel when the bullet exits, if there is a ding on that crown your accuracy will go south. So keep it that way, be careful when cleaning, bringing the rod back through the barrel don't ding that crown. The 700P is a Very accurate bolt action, with the 40x trigger, that is not standard, That's a fine tuned rifle. Keep it clean & enjoy shooting. VERY NICE RIFLE. Be Safe, Chris. What caliber is it, 308 or 300 Win Mag.?

Both of my Varmint Synthetics (same action and barrel as the P model, different stock) look identical at the muzzle and they both shoot very well. Take it out and feed it what it likes, and you should be smiling big.

Thanks guys for the info and assurance. The gun is chambered in 300 win Mag, I'm dying to put some 230 grain Berger bullets through it, ABM Ammunition, a company through Berger sells a box of 300 win mag 230 grain match bullets with a .745 I believe bullet coeficiency which sounds Awesome. Muzzle velocity of around 2800 ft per second. Down range energy at 1000 yards around 1400 foot pounds!! Their bullets are seated out far, 3.6 overall length! Would have to single load I'm sure:)

Remington's have alot of free bore, if 3.6 fits in your magazine your good to go. Just double check to make sure your not jamming your rounds. Again GREAT RIFLE, take good care of it and probably the rifle will shoot better then you, don't always blame the rifle for a bad shot. Be Safe Chris

Mine in 300wm would feed 208 amax seating into the rifling. I loaded it at 0.020 off the lands with H1000 and CCI LRM primer. It was a little shy of 2900, which surprised me with the factory barrel. I don't remember the OAL and don't have my book with me. I do remember it was much longer than manual OAL. Hope she shoots well for you.

Thanks again guys, any thought on the break in process? Without going too crazy:) lol Long story, Remington sent me 80 Rounds of new ammo of my choice, and of course this newly manufactured 700 Police as a replacement gun.thanks for any thoughts.

I would degrease everything on the action, lube it with a decent oil, torque the action screws and take it to the range. Fire a few shots to see what its doing and to get your zero, and have fun. I don't baby any new firearm, but I don't let it get too hot either. When it gets fairly warm but not hot to the touch, I leave the bolt open and let it cool for a bit before I go back to shooting.

You can call Remington on their break in prosess. After I had a Barrel change on my 700, had it blueprinted installed a Rock Creek M24 5R barrel installed by Accurate Ordance, Their gunsmith advisted me to shoot 20 rounds slow fire zeroed at 200 yards, done. clean with KG-1 dry patch Hoppe's#9 dry patch KG-12 dry patch Hoppe's#9 dry patch & 1 patch with Kroil oil. I remove the Kroil oil before I shoot. Worked Great for me.

Use a quality coated rod and a bore guide. Other than that, choose your voodoo. :-)

My recommendation for breaking in the barrel is to clean it before shooting and then shoot until accuracy drops. If your barrel can take thousands of shots before it is warn out, I highly doubt a few pieces of cloth up and down the barrel while new does anything whatsoever. I was once told that it helps smooth the rifling a little faster. I guess that could be true, but it also means that not breaking in the barrel will eventually get the rifling to the same point.

I know there are people who will swear by it, but I'm one of the guys who thinks its a complete waste of time and cleaner. But in the end, the point is to go and have fun.. so if that's what you find fun then clean all you want.
