I was just on Fulton Armory's website and noticed that they have the one piece nylon coated dewey rod, and also a rod guide for M1/M1A rifles. Is this all that I need as far as the rod is concerned? Also, what is the rod guide, and how is it used? Thanks. Im new to these rifles, so I need to learn a few things!

A Dewey rod is one of the best available. You will need a different jagor other attachment for each caliber, but I think the rod itself is the same. The bore guide(rod guide) keeps the metal jag from dinginf the chamber, bore and muzzle. I am not familiar with the M1A bore guide, but you most likely just attach it to the muzzle. Some bolt and breakopen actions put the bore guide to the rear.

Nope, you'll also need some bore brushes to clean the bore with and a patch jig to put the patches on to punch the bore after you scrub it.

The rod guide ensure that the rod enters the bore dead center and does not come in contact with the chamber or crown (depending on rifle type and which end it is made for) This is so that the rod does not cause damage to the chamber/crown which can have an adverse effect on accuracy.

All the above stated items and USGI cleaning kit for those this in case moments at the range, Brass .30 cal brush, a 1/2 dozen bore mops, CLP and or LP, Hoppe's #9 or simuliar, Hoppe's Copper Solvent or simuliar, patches, loop for patch and a copy of Part # TM 9-1005-223-12 the Operators Maintenance Manual printed by the dept or the Army.......Oh and the gas system nut wrench should come as part of the cleaning kit but make sure cause you need on of those as well.

Be sure to lock the Bolt open using an EMPTY mag and clean it well before your 1st shooting.

Guys where to get this whole kit? also a combi tool? sheesh, this gun's worse than the AR madness!!:)

What Karsten says about the bolt hold open with a mag is wise advice. Heed it well, but I guarantee if you do not, you will only make the mistake once!

You may also want to consider a solvent port: it's a neat gadget you 'll place in between the chamber and the bolt. It will hold the bolt open for you so you can soak patches with whatever solvent you're using, as well as keeping alot of crud form entering the reciever area during cleaning. Both the solvent port and a muzzle guide can be found at

Depending on the type of jag you buy, you may be able to pull the patch/jag through the bore by inserting the patch/jag combination into the solvent port, then CAREFULLY inserting the cleaning rod into the bore with the help of the muzzle guide. Then attatch the rod to the jag, apply solvent, and pull through the bore. This works best with wrap style jags, (Pierce or Parker Hale style jags).

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I guess I need to be a little more clear. In regards to the rod, I was just wondering if it came with the slotted attachment or jag to put the patch on. If not, where do I find it?

For the cleaning kit check out the Auctions like www.gunbroker.com Call www.fredsm14stocks.com they should have them and while talking to them order a $5.00 USGI sling.

As for the Jag...I push/pull the first few patches so I use the loop type.
Walmart, any sporting goods store that sell firearms and cleaning supplies, Fred Meyers Sportsman's Warehouse if you have them should have everything you need including the Tetra Grease.

Good Luck

Jriggs - Make sure that when you're cleaning the bore that you have your rifle inverted, that is, action down. Otherwise, cleaning solvents may bleed into your gas system. I only clean action up when I know that I am going to open up the gas system for cleaning. BTW, you need only clean the gas system every 500 rounds or so. Opening up the gas system for every cleaning is unnecessary and will compromise the integrity of the gas plug screws. A quick way to determine if your gas system needs cleaning is to lock teh action open and tilt your rifle muzzle up then down. If the gas piston slides freely (you'll hear and feel it), no need to clean yet.

Thanks for that info Noban. You just saved me from posting another question regarding how ofen to clean the gas system. The way I shoot, I could probably go 10 years without cleaning the gas system! Im the type of guy that takes a new gun, shoots a box or so through it, field strip, clean/lube and put it away. Then once or twice a year after I do the same thing again. This M1A should be serving my Grandchildren well. Thats one reason why I'm buying it. Thanks again everyone for helping me on my new purchase.

I use a dewey rod. I don't bother with the bore guides. Frankly, they're a major pain in the butt. I just use care around the muzzle.

You can get all your needed cleaning supplies from mail order places like Midsouth, Midway, Sinclair, etc. Most have a web site too.
The dewey cleaning rod is plastic coated so it will not damage the rifle bore, it is a great rod.
The cleaning rod guide for a M1a is a hard plastic guide the slides over the flash hider at the barrel muzzle end and keeps the rod centered while cleaning so you don't wear one side of the barrel at the muzzle. It is a bit of a pain, but it works.

As others have said you should use a bronze barrel brush as well as cleaning patches for the inside of the barrel. You will also need a chamber brush to clean the chamber. You can get these from outfits that have sell military gun parts like SARCO in NJ.

Have fun

I wouldn't use the Dewey bore guide on the M1A. There is a better bore guide available from Brownell's that fits inside the flash suppressor(match rifles/#7taper reamer only)and will save you alot of wear on the crown. It is like having a barrel extension inside the suppressor while you are cleaning. Check it out.
