Question on cutts compensator

Is the cutts compensator tube without the mod choke tip screwed on a cylinder bore choke?
I recently inherited a winchester model 12 16 ga, and i want to go quail hunting with it. The gun has a cutts compensator tube on it with a modified choke screwed on the tip, I dont have the other chokes just the mod. I have been told the mod choke will just turn quail into feathers if close enough, so is the cutts comp tube open choke without the choke tip and can it even be fired without the screw on choke tip? And will the mod choke blow the quail away if within 20 or 30 feet?
 
Yes, no tube is cylinder bore. At 20 feet (7 paces) even a cylinder choke will blow quail away (depending on your load). How about a net with a long handle? ;)

You need to do a bit of test patterning so you'll know just how your gun performs with the loads you anticipate using. In reality, you'd have to be lightning fast to get a shot off while a bird is still within 20-feet.
 
yes i understand i need to do some test pattering, but i stil need to know if the cutts comp tube can be fired without the mod choke tip screwed on. And if so can i fire slugs through it.
 
I thought I already said "yes" -- with modern "thin wall" screw-in chokes the threads are very close to the bore and shooting without a tube in place is not recommended. With the cutts, there is plenty of clearance between the threads and the bore; but, after firing without the choke in place, make sure you clean and lube the threads.
