Question on buying a new 10/22.

For my first rifle purchase I plan on obtaining a Ruger 10/22 deluxe.

Although I know how to evaluate a pistol (I have several) I am not familiar with rifles, nor the 10/22 itself (we all have to start somewhere). So, when I go to purchase one is there anything specific I should give my particular attention? I will evaluate the cosmetics the best I can including the stock condition, sights for straightness, barrel/ crown (perhaps dropped along the way or shipping damage), but anything else I should know? I understand the newer ones have polymer triggers whereas the older ones are aluminum but oh well.

Buy it.

Just buy the darn thing, shoot the hell out of it (500 round box), and if it's messed up just call Ruger. Pretty good customer service. The 10/22 has TONS of cool add-ons and some great speed loader products if you like shootin' all day long like me:) Also has a lot of hi-cap options if you are in a state where they are legal. And don't waist your money on the "deluxe" edition unless you want to hang it on the wall more than you actually shoot it. All around- a super fun rimfire.

It is a simple design with few things that can go wrong with it. Buy it and shoot it. After a few bricks, you'll want to start "customizing". That's when it becomes a money pit. :D

$199 (shipping included).

Also, get the Butler Creek mags with the steel lips. One of the better aftermarket mags out there and it locks back on last round.

Pretty much says it all. Assuming you are going to buy a new one, you pretty much take what they give you or come with. Personally I'd rather find a good used one or Pre-plasitc. Lots of luck on that. You say Delux but perhaps you mean the Walnut Sporter. I have owned quite a few and work on them regularly. Not that there is a big problem, just like to tune them a bit. The Ruger 10/22 is still one of many good choices and you will enjoy it. .... :)
