Question on a High Standard

I have an opportunity to buy a E Hartford High Standard Supermatic Citation w/ 2 mags. Serial number SH174XX. Story has it, this pistol was a back up gun for an old Bullseye shooter. He passed away a number of years ago and his widow sold off all his guns. You can tell by the looks of it, that it was a back up gun. Probably 95-96% bluing, most of the bluing is still visible in wear points such as the slide to frame, etc. Checkering on the grips is still crisp and sharp. If I had to guess, I'd say it has less than 2000 rounds shot in it.

I shot it today. 25 yard Rapid Fire Bullseye target, iron sights, and the first five shots landed in the black, and I wasn't really trying that hard. Next five shots, I pulled one but called it. I think this pistol and I could get along real well. But...

Here are my two questions. Estimated value? Can I still get parts?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Those SH series Citations were among the last products of the old H-S company, c. 1981-1982. They have the Allen screw takedown rather than the push button used earlier. They are OK for accuracy, but prices run less than those for the older guns, with $500 being about tops, even for new in the box.

The High Standard is a great target pistol. The parts for military grip guns are all pretty much the same whether made in Hamden, East Hartford, or Houston, TX. The reason for the allen screw used on some was it required less fitting than the push button as many of the SH series were assembled from existing parts. A push button takedown SH is worth more than one with the screw.

The pistols are top notch but two things you should keep in mind. The pistols were designed for standard velocity 22 ammo, not high velocity. The second thing is the driving spring (recoil spring) must be up to spec and most target shooters replaced them on a regular schedule. Failure to follow these two rules can result in the frame cracking.

With just a little care, the High Standard will provide great performance for a lifetime.
